Thats real exciting Moose. I have 2 backup jars in my freezer full of this seed. I will send you more seed if you need it. I have probably 800 seeds so. I am just guessing. But, its a lot. The ball is in your court and I am rooting for you.

They will need something to climb. If you can run some heavy twine or wire from the shed, that'll do. Wish I lived nearby!

Not much to report. I planted 4 seeds and so far only 1 is up. It looks good though. I will wait another few days and if nothing else comes up, I'll plant 4 more.

George, I managed to get something for it to climb. I put 4 more in a damp paper towel to germinate.

Moose, if you got warm weather those seeds should germinate quick for you. Good luck and remember, I can always send you more seed. I have tons of that seed and do not intend to use it any time soon.

Hey Glen,
I had 2 more sprout in a paper towel and planted them today. Temps in the high 80's and we hit 91 yesterday.
Thank you for the offer, but I think we are off to the races. I hope so anyway.
Ive only used 8 seeds so far, so not quite half.

Ok, so on these 4 beans, we had 100% germination. I have 4 sprouted beans planted and 1 plant that looks good. Here is a picture of the 2 I planted this morning.

Obviously there is nothing wrong with the seed. The real question is whether you have the climate this bean needs. The last time I planted was in December I do believe. The vines looked good. There was tons of blossoms. The vines did not make beans. I planted the first time during my rainy season and the vines did produce beans and make seed. However, the lions share of the blossoms just fell off the vines. Judging by the quantity of blooms these vines make, the vines should be covered over with beans if conditions are right. This is a very picky bean variety. I do not know what this variety is looking for. George would know more than I since he knows exactly where this bean came from. A woman who lives in Hawaii had this seed before me and she absolutely loved it. That should have been a tropical climate. So, I am stumped. We are rooting for you here in Panama. We need to find out how to get this vine to produce or it might just go extinct on us. A tragedy in my opinion. Just look at the color of this seed! Its sort of a copper toned ivory color. Very unique. The seed starts out on the creamy white side. As it ages it gets this patina. Absolutely lovely.

glen , No, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the seed you sent me. I had 100% germination with the paper towel method. Yes, it's a pretty bean. I also love the round shape of it. My plant has started to climb the string and it didn't take much coaching from me.

This bean comes from the Mountains of Oaxaca and has been grown successfully at 5000' altitude, near Mexico City. It handles heat alright. But from where it comes, it is accustomed to cooler nights as well as a significant part of the growing season being fairly temperate. It's day length sensitive, requiring shorter days in order to bloom, which, at my latitude translates to October. The double whammy is that it not only requires shorter days, but the pollen can't handle high temps. For Moose, I suspect it may make an excellent fall bean.

Well, I have a lot of seed. Do not be shy about asking for more Moose. I have the seed in my freezer in jars. There is a lot. It would be nice to have a stock pile of seed in Texas.

macmex That being the case, it might help to stagger my planting. Plant some now and plant again in August. I have it now where it gets shade in the morning and afternoon sun. I could also try morning sun, afternoon shade. Like you I have an abundance of native bees and a freaking ton of Bumblebees. I'm hoping I don't get any crosses. I worry more about the BB's than the native bees. Thanks glen, It would never hurt to have more, but if all goes well, I'm hoping for success.
