A question came up recently, and I'm sure it's not the first time, about how to insert pictures into a post. Here's a brief tutorial for the simplest method.
When one is responding to post, there are two options for response. The first, is to simply click below "Quick reply" and start writing. This method doesn't allow any formatting of text or insertion of links or images.
The second method for responding is to click on the "Reply button" on the right hand side of the screen. This opens up a dialog for formatting and graphics.
Within this dialog, there are two ways to insert pictures. The first, and simplest, is to click on the "Add image to post" button, on the top right. Then, just follow their instructions. It's very straight forward. This will insert a very small image into the post. If one clicks on the small image, it will open a larger picture in a separate window.
The other way to insert a picture is more involved. It involves the use of a separate image hosting website. One uploads their picture into the hosting website and then obtains the URL (link) to that uploaded image. After this, they go to the toolbar (pictured above) and clicks on the icon of the picture window, which is seventh from the right. They then past the URL into the top dialog box and write a brief description of it in the second dialog box (optional). The "Alt text" dialog box is there to help Google list the image for others to readily find it.
I used to use Photobucket for image hosting. But they went to a paid subscription and I had to drop them. Imgur, works, and it's free. I'm sure there are other sites. I'd like to invite others to tell us about their image hosting favorites.
Okay, all for now. I'll try to come back and add to this thread.

Thank you, George, for the tutorial. We appreciate all the time and effort you put into this for the rest of us to be able to post here.

I have and do use Imgur as well, but I find it cumbersome and not very intuitive. Lately, I've been playing with Post Images. It's easy to create folders to organize your photos, and uploading pics is a snap. In fact, I've starting using Post Images to host all the images I post here on GCSS. AND, it's also FREE!

This is good to know! I started using Homesteading Edu's image hosting when I became aware of IMGUR's disapproval of people using them for posting images on other websites. They haven't done anything to stop folk from doing it, but they might well, some time. I can use Homesteading Edu, but I can't let others do it. That would take granting administrative privileges that I can't just hand out. And, we pay hundreds of dollars a year to have the website. It certainly isn't free.
One of these times I, or someone else (hint, hint...) will post instructions for how to post images using an image hosting website. The disadvantage to doing so is, as Rick mentioned, it can be unwieldy. The advantage is that the pictures are generally larger and it's easier for others to see them at a glance.

Now that we decommissioned Homesteading Edu a lot of my images on this forum have become unusable. I'll be working on fixing them. I have investigated other image hosting options and there are several, non perfect. However, interestingly, I've found that IMGBB, the service which Proboards uses by default, is not bad. I went to their home page and created my own account. By doing this I found I can post the full size photos I prefer by selecting "BBCode Full" as the link option. The big disadvantage I see with IMGBB is that I can't tag my images and I'm not sure one can search for them without logging into the account. I created albums, to help me relocate uploaded images. IMGBB allows unlimited, free uploads with the option either to have them expire (and be deleted) or to remain online indefinitely. This is a good thing.
Personally, I think it's best to keep copies of all images on my hard drive and have multiple backups. Photos I take are too valuable to lose.
Another almost random point: Google has a free image storage app. It's called Google Photos. I don't see a way to use them as a host, meaning I can't figure out how to make the image link for use on a post on this forum. But on a limited basis, it would at least work as a means of storing photos.

Hey George, I just popped over to IMGBB and it says there's a 32MB limit. I didn't create an account, so maybe it's different if you do. Just an fyi.

I believe that's 32 megabytes for each image. I generally resize any of my images for upload to where they are under 100 kilobytes in size. They display better at that size.

Yay!! It worked!!
I used Postimages, copied the direct link and pasted it into the URL dialog box in the insert image menu selection, just like macmex taught me...

Wow, Woodeye! When I saw that cutting board, I thought, “I wouldn’t be able to use that. It’s so pretty I would never want to get it dirty or scratched.” It’s gorgeous. What kinds of wood did you use?
I also love the picture of the baby pattypan squash. I’ve never grown pattypan, but my mother has taken to them in recent years. They make a beautiful fruit.

chrysanthemum, Thank You. It's made of black walnut and sugar maple, which is also called hard maple. The black walnut that is in this board shows some of the lighter sap wood that black walnut has. I don't get boards like it very often, but when I do I use them in cutting boards. I get the lumber from Ocooch hardwoods in Viola, Wisconsin. I know, people don't want to use them for fear of degrading them, but they can be refurbished. I can run them through the thickness planer, then sand the top smooth again, oil it and wax it, and voila! it's good as new, but 1/8" to 1/4" thinner. Not sure if you remember Anita Bryant, she was Miss Oklahoma back in 1958, this cutting board is going to her...
My little brother requested the patty pan, so I got some seed for the plain old white bush scallop squash. I've always like those too, haven't grown them for awhile so it's nice to have them again for a change...

I remember Anita Bryant from the old '70s orange juice commercials ...
"And remember, a day without Florida orange juice, is like a day without sunshine!"
"Orange juice from Florida … It isn't just for breakfast anymore!
Thanks, for the great memories Teddy! I went back just now and looked up some of the old commercials. It was a trip down memory lane to more innocent times, and happier childhood days.
She really was a good singer back in the day.

Agreed. She was quite something, I am very anxious to meet her, and I am hoping that it will be this month.
After the 4th, I'm gonna get in touch with my sister and try to get it set up.
All I want is an autograph and a photo, but the photo has to have me in it too. Oh how selfish of me! (gasp)
I enjoyed the video, yes she was a good singer for sure.
Once I have met her I will post my report on the meeting. Pictures too if possible...
