I got a text message from my neighbors yesterday to let me know that they had extra fresh eggs this week. Of course I was very happy to take fresh eggs off their hands, and decided to dig them a few onions to take them when I went to pick up the eggs.
The onions are running small this year, probably because I planted them too close together. This is just a picture of a dozen that I bartered for 2 dozen eggs. There's still over 400 more onions to dig out there, I'll let them go for another 10 days or 2 weeks, then have a mass digging...

Those are looking great, Woodeye. They may not be jumbo onions, but they still look to be quite a respectable and usable size. With over four hundred more out there, you’ve got a lot of onion on your hands. Wow.
I don’t know whether you have any means of drying the greens, but I’ve done that and then ground them into a very flavorful onion powder. It has become one of our favorite additions to homemade mayonnaise.

I have an Excalibur dehydrator that I use for drying peppers to make powder, I'm sure it would work fine for onion tops. Cool.😎
I forgot to add in the OP, these are Candy onions...

The Excalibur should work perfectly. I have the five-tray economy version that they used to make. I cut the greens into two- or three-inch lengths and arrange them on the mesh trays and dry them until there’s no doubt whatsoever that the moisture is gone. If you’re experienced in making pepper powder, the onion top powder will be faster and easier, in my experience. It’s great stuff.

The Candy onions are now safely out of the Iron Curtain and resting under the carport. Although the onions were not consistently of good size, I can't really consider it a bad year, just not a year to remember. I have considered many factors; planted too closely together, not watered enough, tree roots sapping moisture, etc. I can't decide which thing was the biggest problem so in conclusion my diagnosis is that some grew bigger and better than other ones did. hehehe
This is the small batch that I dug for my brother a few days ago, they are boxed and traveling to Idaho. I got a text message from him last night and he was in North Dakota.
This is a picture of the rest of the crop.

Wow, Woodeye, those look great. I know you’ve had better results in the past, but this crop doesn’t look like anything to sneeze at in my opinion. Congratulations on a job well done.

Thank You, chrysanthemum. Even though digging hundreds of onions is a considerable amount of work, the fun of setting out the plants is the overriding factor to me. On years that I don't have a garden, I always sit around during the winter wishing I had some onion plants to set out. The only cure for that is get it done. I'm certain that I will do it all over again starting in late February next year...😉
