Oh man! I'm so sorry to see the grasshopper damage AGAIN this year, heavyhitterokra. I'm not an insect guru by any means, so I have no idea why grasshoppers would be that thick in your area and in mine there has not been much of a problem really. I think grasshoppers are nibbling a few holes in some of my plant leaves, but not damaging them severely. I have seen several baby grasshoppers out there this year, I need to spray my plants again.
It's been long enough that the peppered cheeseburger is sounding pretty good again, I just might have one for supper after bit with a steamed Big Jim pepper on it.
You are 100% correct, it's impossible to predict whether or not we should have just taken the year off from gardening. It's like going fishing though, you never know if they're biting until you go find out...

heavyhitterokra, the cheeseburger craving bounced off of you and came back to hit me with a vengeance. To solve this problem, I created a Big Jim cheeseburger this evening. It has all the basic ingredients of the Shishito cheeseburger, but has one half of a Big Jim pepper and one Aji Panca pepper added, both cooked until tender along with the onions and Shishito peppers. A very nice combo cheeseburger, was excellent. The Big Jim pepper had just a touch of heat, basically mild. All 3 varieties of peppers in this meal were outstanding.

Woodeye,
I zoomed in on that photo. Wow! That was a good-looking burger! Makes me wish I hadn't already eaten my supper. If I hadn't I think I'd have changed the menu after I saw that.

heavyhitterokra, if you chose to sell fish bate, do you suppose the grasshoppers would disappear? I feel like nature is out to get you!

Amyinowasso, That's funny! My brain didn't even notice that. I had to go back to read it again. That happens to the best of us. If that ever happens again, you can go back to an old post and hit the 'EDIT' button in the top right corner, and change the spelling. You can also highlight text and change the size, color, and font of your post. That's also how you add photos if you want to later.

An update for the Beaver Dam pepper plant from seeds that chrysanthemum sent me. This plant continues to churn out peppers and does not seem to realize that it is going to overload itself one of these days. I could not capture all the peppers on it in one picture, but I counted over 20 on it this morning. I have harvested 5 peppers this year, and I figured that would be close to the crop for the entire year. This plant is teaching me to not be so pessimistic...

Wow, Woodeye. Thanks for that picture. I never have had that kind of production on my Beaver Dam peppers [though I’ve only grown three plants of that in my entire life, so it’s not that I’m all that very experienced]. I think you may just be a “pepper whisperer” or some such honorific title. You really seem to have a knack for all sorts of peppers.

The flavor of my peppers this year, so far, are washed out. Not enough sun, I guess.

Update on my Big Jim green chile peppers. The seeds that I planted on April 1st (this is not an April Fools joke), have done better than the plants that were seeded on March 1st. The younger plants did not have any blooms on them when I set them out. Once they got rooted in at the garden, it was off to the races for the younger plants, whereas the older plants have not done as well. Lesson learned, at least for me. Both of these pictures show plants that were seeded on April 1st.

Dawn used to say that peppers pouted if they got too cold and would sit and do nothing for a month. Maybe the first batch got chilled.

That's quite possible, amyinowasso. Even though all the pepper plants were set out in the garden on the same day, May 23, the younger ones might have done better because they had not gone into production at all when they got transplanted. It could be that the weird weather syndrome has struck again...

Picked some peppers last night and then again this morning to help keep the plants from getting stressed during this heatwave that is going on right now.
