I have one child who is particularly fond of radishes. She loves eating them and growing them. Last summer I remember sitting with her while we were waiting for a doctor’s appointment, and we were looking over the radish selection at Sand Hill Preservation. I was letting her choose one packet, but there were too many that she wanted to try. They did, however, offer a mixed packet of their selections, so that’s what we ended up purchasing and planting this spring. Every few days we pull up a few radishes in the morning when I’m working in the garden. My daughter cuts them up and salts them, and we eat them as a little refreshing snack. Today there were several that looked ready to pull, so I grabbed them after I did some watering. One in particular surprised me by the need I had to work it out of the ground a bit. Here’s what I harvested. I don’t know for sure what that long red one is, but I’m guess that it’s Cincinnati Market since that has much shorter days to maturity than Long Scarlet, both of which are listed on Sand Hill’s website. Whatever it was, it was really good. My daughter has decided that she really likes the white radishes, though. We’ve definitely been having fun with this little crop.

That’s delightful that she has acquired a taste for them and knows how to grow them. Thank you for sharing. I have had a bunch growing for some time now. They should be ready, but nah. Not sure what the issue is. I’m getting impatient. Ha

Ours only recently started plumping up. I think it was after I transplanted the tomatoes and peppers, and I was being careful to give the transplants good water, I started being more generous with water for the radishes. That helped.

Right! More water! Most excellent advice. I’m always thinking about the drought impact on deeper rooted main crops, not those poor radishes trying to root out in the top few inches getting pummeled by wind. I am slowly scything and gathering materials for a dense mulch, but these are not covered yet. *runs off to go water the radishes*
