The differences between Red Ripper and Texas Longhorn. Texas Longhorn had lots of runners and sprawled out across a wide area. The pods are long with an average of 17 to 19 peas per pod. Red Ripper had a runner or two, but not like TL. The pods are much smaller too. With average peas per pod from 10 to 13. Red Ripper

I remembered the reason I acquired Red Ripper in the first place. There used to be a fellow called the dirt doctor that had a radio show or podcast. Sorry it’s been over a decade and I don’t remember which. Anyways, I’d listen to his show and noticed he kept talking about Red Ripper this and Red Ripper that. So while I was out seed shopping on a trip to Missouri, I stopped in at Baker Creek. They had a nice sized bag and I purchased it. This was in May of 2007.

I remember reading about Red Ripper back in the 80s, in the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook. Was always very tempted to try it but didn't get around to it. Then, in 2008, someone gave me seed to Kentucky Red, which was close enough.
There are so many varieties out there!
