I’ve been selecting two bean varieties for a couple of years now; one called Latta Lake and the other Golden Lake.
Latta Lake is an upright, compact bush bean that produces very uniform sets of dark green, extra-fine grade 4–4 1/2" pods. And has good resistance to mosaic virus. I originally got the idea to develop this variety from Burpee’s Lika Lake bean. I purchased several bean varieties from Johnny’s Selected Seeds and did a trail to see which variety I liked best. After deciding early summer, I replanted two more rows that same summer and did the first selection for extra-fine grade pods and high resistance to mosaic virus. I would have also selected for other disease resistances but I don’t have any other in the area to know if they’d be resistant. Second year I replanted the best and did a second selection for longer pods, still of extra-fine grade, uniform setting and higher yielders. This year I sent some seed to several friends in the area for them to see how they perform. So far, so good. Latta is a name for a channel lake outside Rome City, Indiana. Its the lake in my avatar. It’s privately owned (and, of corse, somehow DNR controlled), spring-fed lake at the head of Sylvan Lake.
Golden Lake is the wax version of the Latta lake. It has straight, 4–5" pods on upright, compact bush plants. Something I noticed is that the stems stay on the bean when picked which keeps the pods intact. It also has high resistance to mosaic virus. I basically did the same thing as Latta Lake. I also sent the seed out to some friends to see how they do.
I wish I had photos of these beans, but I don’t have a camera currently. I’m going to start on two other bean varieties next year; another yellow variety and a pole variety.
