I've been reading about these and all reviews have been fantastic. Great tasting and love really hot dry weather. Only problem is--nobody had them for sale. Thankfully, I got these in the mail today from a generous gardener friend. I believe (hope) they will have time to mature before frost. I'll share next year if I can grow a few dry ones.
No idea how they compare to 'calico'.

My favorite cowpea so far. I ordered seeds a month or so ago for planting next year. I've grown them several times, first time was in 2009 I believe. The listing says they are bush plants, but the ones I have grown have always been vining plants & I've only gotten mine from Baker Creek seeds. I haven't grown Calico.

The instructions I got from the seed provider were: "Give them plenty of space. They don't need to climb."
We'll see!

Yes, that is correct June. They are prolific. I got my start from Roger Winn way back around 06 or 07. I grew them in 08 and 10. I tested germination this year and had good results. Excellent pea.

I hope they grow well for you, june. I always planted them between okra stalks and they climbed up the on the stalks for easy picking. They didn't strangle the okra though, it still produced. Anyway, I know you will like them, they are a fantastic cowpea. I remember hmoosek said he grew them too. There may be a bush plant style and a vine plant style, but regardless of that they are awesome...

No, not like Calico. ORB are a roundish pea.

Found the picture of my garden back in 2009. The Razorback peas are on the right, this picture was taken on July 13 of that year. You can see the vines are wanting to climb, and later on they did climb up the okra stalks after the okra got taller...

I still have a patch of corn stalks standing...I can plant them in there and if they want to climb, they can...and if they don't want to, I can cut the tops off the cornstalks later.
