MN13 This is a black and white cowpea. I obtained my seed from zeedman who was kind enough to share multiple varieties with me. Seed stock is from 2015 which I attained in 2021. Germination rate was 8/10. After another day, I had 10/10 germination. I started this thread to document success and failures. As you can see, this one jumped to life! I have reached out to Chris to get more details about this variety. All I know at this point is it’s a black and white cowpea bred by the University of Minnesota.

I heard back from Zeedman. This is what he had to say about MN13 and MN150
The "MN" in the name signifies that those cowpeas were developed by Professor David Davis at the University of Minnesota.

Looks like I made a mistake. 2015 seed and 100% germination. The last two just took a little longer.

I find stuff like this interesting. These sprouted at the same time and I planted the sprouts minutes apart. One is well on its way and the other one is barely peeping through the soil.

Very nice. How much isolation will all your different cowpeas need?

Very nice. How much isolation will all your different cowpeas need? I’m growing in pots. I’m going to have 1 on the front porch, one in the pickup bed, back porch, etc. should be a good 30 feet or so in between them.

@bon
Why not indeed! That’s my motto! Been testing all my old seed. Looks like all the cowpeas I’ve tried to germinate has done well in spite of some of them being from the year 2007. I put a small handful of red ripper that I bought from Baker Creek when I visited them in May of 07. Guess what? They sprouted too so I was forced to find a spot. I’ve got to stop this though. My porch looks like pea valley! I’m almost there though. I’ve got one more paper towel that has a dozen ozark razorback that I grew in 08. I’ll take care of those come this evening. All seeds going back into freezer when womenfolk ain’t looking. You have to watch the women around here though, they find something in the freezer and they want to cook it. My Sister stayed with us for a few weeks and she found a jar of big boy peas. She was going to cook them for supper! I almost had a heart attack! Her excuse? “Well, it looked like black eyed peas to me!” Grrrrrrr!

That's hilarious, moose!
I think you're onto something, you may have to think about your own personal freezer...

Picture Update. I think it’s been almost a week. I am going to do my best to keep you guys up to date with my success and failure. So far, so good. Some may wonder why I’d grow a northern cowpea when we have so many southern varieties. Well, it’s kind of hard to say exactly, I like growing stuff from every region I can get seeds from. Yes, there’s lots of failures, but also some success.

All your cowpeas, Big Boy, MN 150, MN 13, look great! No deer on your porch, I see success in your future...

All your cowpeas, Big Boy, MN 150, MN 13, look great! No deer on your porch, I see success in your future... It was a big shock to me when I moved to Texas (to the Edwards Plateau which has the highest density of Whitetail deer per acre of anywhere in North America, I believe) that deer would come right up on the porch. I had to put a long baby gate across the front to protect my plants. Thanks for the photo updates, HMooseK.

No place is safe from a determined deer. I saw my wife's deer in the front seat of my truck one day, reaching to swipe a cookie off the dash where I always keep a tin of cookies while I'm out working in the garden. Sometimes, it's crazy to see what they will do for a snack.
Either that, or she was just listening to the radio? I leave my doors open, so I can hear gospel music playing and preaching while I work.
