So, last year I decided to create another okra hybrid, but unlike years past I decided to try flower emasculation for guaranteed results: I had read about the use of emasculation in a few papers on okra, and watched a video on YouTube about how it is done. Flower emasculation had a higher failure rate than I was expecting, but I did end up with one good pod full of seed out of ~8 attempts. I combined 'Windridge' (female) with Old Red Blush (male): So far, this hybrid is outpacing my other varieties (hybrid vigor) - unphased by the deluge earlier last month while the others were drowning, and even at this early stage it is apparent that it has inherited more red branching than Windridge has: Will be very curious to see what the mature plant and pods look like. Anything could happen! Good clean fun.

I loved reading that!
Thanks, for posting the photos too. Very exciting things going on there at your place this year.

Those are looking great. I’m looking forward to watching, so to speak, as they grow.

Could have just been the light yesterday, but the color on these hybrid stems look darker red than its parentage. Almost a purple or burgundy color.

The two photos, Old Red Blush from your original post and the one just above, certainly look different on the screen. Do you have any uncrossed Old Red Blush growing this year where you could put two stems side by side in the same light. It would be interesting to see just how much difference there is. I wonder if the color will change later in the season with differing light intensity or temperature.

Those are looking truly lovely, Hedgeapple. Are you growing for both seed and eating or just for seed at this point?

Those are looking truly lovely, Hedgeapple. Are you growing for both seed and eating or just for seed at this point? Thank you. Most of these will just be eaten. If they taste really good and don't harden too quickly, I'll isolate seed pods with bags for next year.
