I’m already thinking of next year. One of the most enjoyable things I do after Christmas is pull my seed jars out and just look over them. It’s also one of the most frustrating things too if you’re a seed collector like me. There’s just no way to grow everything you’d like to.
I bought quite a few beans from eBay this year. If you knew how many bean varieties I already have you’d think I’m nuts for buying more. My wife even asked me what on earth I was going to do with them all. One of these days, I make take a sample of every bean and glue it to a piece of wood and frame it to hang on my wall. It would sure be a conversation piece!
I’m getting off topic. I tend to ramble sometimes. I do know that I have a few varieties that I want to grow. Some I have grown, some I’m growing now and some I’ve wanted to grow for some time.
Here are a few that’s already on the list.
Heavy Hitter Okra—I’ve never grown, but I’ve followed the thread with glee!
Tennessee Cut Short Bean— I currently have this one growing in an attempt to save seeds. I love the growth pattern and the unique bean shape.
Purple Haze tomato. I’ve grown this one over and over. I started out with F3 seeds and I’m somewhere around F9. I didn’t cull/select like some people did. I just let it grow and saved seeds from the ones that looked good to me. I can’t even remember what Bill told me the parents were. Something along the lines of Black Cherry and Brandywine, but I could be wrong. I just like this little fellow.
Hawaiian Yellow Cherry and Hawaiian Orange Cherry tomatoes. My friend Cyndi gave me a bag of seeds. When I say bag, I’m not kidding! There were at least 200 varieties. Some I had grown, some I had not. I grew the yellow ones and successfully saved seeds, and tried the orange ones, but I wasn’t successful with the orange. I’ll try again as I have a small amount left.
Mini Gold Tomato—I’ve grown this just about every year for over a decade. My friend Ted Maiden gave me my start and as luck would have it, I was able to give it back to him when he lost his seeds during a move. I love this little tomato.
Texas Longhorn Cowpea—I grew this one out this year and I fell head over heels in love with it!
Our family melon which I named Charley’s pride. A garden of mine just doesn’t feel right without it. I once had plenty of seed when my Uncle was gardening along with me, but as time has gone by, I’m down to just a handful of seeds. I needs to go through my stash and see exactly what’s left. I tried seeds from 2007 this year, but the rains wiped me out. This is what they look like.
