The vet recommended we treat the yard for fleas. I think I’ll hold off on that.

I tend to agree with George's hypothesis on the unusual grasshopper infestations here. My neighbor owns several thousand acres of land. Two of those sections are back to back, bordering my garden (1,280 acres of beef and dairy cattle). I see them out there spraying something or other several times per year.
I've also seen a video posted of so many grasshoppers in their pasture that a man driving a tractor with a front loader was able to drive along with his bucket about a foot off the ground, scooping grasshoppers by the tens of thousands. So many, that they resembled water pouring out of his loader as he dumped them on the ground to smash them with the bottom of the bucket. (Now that was an impressive amount of grasshopper flesh)!
Below are just a few of several photos I took last year of the grasshopper damage done to my garden. Unless things change fast, this year threatens to produce similar hoards.
Watermelon devoured by grasshoppers.
Rat snake devoured by grasshoppers.
Grasshoppers under a 75' foot row cover, after a heavy rain, eating cabbage plants from within the row covers.
Cabbage plants after row covers were removed.
Grasshoppers eating a tomato after defoliating the tomato plants.
More tomato damage.
All that was left of our 50 heads of cabbage after the grasshoppers moved on.
This is all the grasshoppers left of our broccoli patch.

I bet, if Ron's neighbors just took some deep breaths and STOPPED all that spraying, give it about two or three years and they would have a LOT fewer pests. Some "old timers" think that "going nuclear" is the best way to deal with pests. I remember, when we first looked at our present home, owner had a small garden and ALL of his tomato plants were white with Sevin dust! We simply don't have enough pests, naturally to even begin to justify pesticides on tomato plants.
We lived on our place two years before we started to see frogs and toads. I think the previous owner kept things too toxic for them.

All those pesticides cannot be good for the cattle? Such a shame, really.

I couldn’t figure out why I was so sluggish, today. My body locked up in the afternoon, basically called it quits. Shewt, I see now the heat index neared 100 degrees today. I was mowing in the sun.

Bet it's the same today too. I just came in, for I don't know how many times, to drink and cool down.

We just got a much-needed heavy downpour here, starting at 3:45 a.m. Woo-Hoo! We needed that! Things were getting pretty crispy after several days in the high 90°s and no rain for the past few weeks.
Wouldn't you know it, I just spent three hours yesterday morning irrigating the garden, via drip tape. Oh well, It ought to be watered very well and very deeply by now, which ought to be a boon for my young okra plants that were sown almost a moth late this year, due to an over-crowded campaign schedule, poor health, and a broken ankle.

Well, ya have a garden. And I’m jelly. MOwed this evening until the battery died and the space was the garden. Green grass looks good there! Frothing at the mouth to break out the tiller because we had a good soak yesterday.

FrostyTurnip, There wasn't any storms here last night, not a drop of rain in sight. It's somewhat cooler today though, so one day of relief from the extreme heat is still very much appreciated. There's a slight chance of a shower later today, but that's all that I'm aware of right now...

I broke ground a couple days ago. Much work needs to be done to ready the plot/beds. I’m feeling terrible because it’s too hot, but I second guess myself about this since I have a lazy streak. On another note, I don’t know how I’m going to fit a garden in with my busy schedule, but honestly friends I don’t think I have a choice given the rate of inflation.
Anyways, about me questioning the heat. Bill has a co-worker that had been boastful about real men weathering the heat inside the machine shop. He walked out to this car yesterday without saying anything to anyone. No one saw him come back and eventually a worker went out to see if his car was there and found him unconscious. Emergency units were able to get a pulse from him and took him to the hospital. That’s all anyone knows at this point. I hope he is okay.
It’s a stark warning. Not only should we be heat conscious, but it’s a good idea to stick around where other people are, just in case. Bill’s job is fully prepared and equipped to handle heat stroke, but that guy went to his car and didn’t tell anyone he wasn’t feeling well.
Call me lazy, I don’t care. Ha
