Hey everyone. I wanted to show the group a beautiful variety of chili that Rick sent me. I only grew one plant. Rick sent me many variety's and I had already planted Purple Thunder the month before so I could really only plant one of each. This one is probably my favorite but there are others. Also, I don't think this is a Bhut Jolokia chili. Its a cross of some kind that is absolutely beautiful!!! Many Bhut crosses are awesome. Rick, this one is a diamond in the rough.
The plant is purple.
The blossoms and stems are purple.
Plants are small in stature but produce continuously.
Pods vary in shape some. Some wrinkle just a bit. Some are nice smooth berry's.
Flavor of the pods is Bhut like however, also not so harsh. Not as spicy as bhut but these little chili's do command respect. I would say that the flavor is of very good quality for making fresh chili relish recipes.
This variety is ornamental and very beautiful.
Rick actually sent me 2 variety's labeled Bhuts that have the purple gene. The other is a yellow type that is also fabulous. George, I am pretty sure you got some of the yellow. Its a must grow.
Notice the little purple stems. These seedlings were just planted. I cut a ripe berry and buried the seed in this pot. Very good germination rate. Good looking little fella's.
Mom.
Mom is always producing new chili's.
Ready to be picked.
This photo is Purple Thunder. Purple Thunder is a big plant. Produces incredible volumes of very spicy peppers. There are 6 of these plants in a row against the fence and all are just covered over. There will be several lbs of peppers cut very soon. Plants produce continuously and for many months. These plants have been harvested many times since they started and don't seem to tire out.
As you know, we have had terrible rains and lack of sun. For an extended period of time. Tropical chili peppers are pretty much unaffected by it.
