Sunday, September 18 Green Country Seed Savers will be meeting at Napolis Italian Restaurant (901 S. Muskogee Ave., Tahlequah, Oklahoma). We will meet at 2 PM and be finished before 4 PM. Come on out if interested in learning more about the self sufficiency skill of saving seed and propagating food plants from year to year. If you like to meet other gardeners, especially the “seedy kind,” and if you would like to chat about what grows well in our unique Cherokee County conditions, then, come out and join us!
The September meeting will be important for two reasons, beside the fun we generally have when we get together: 1) We will be discussing our presence in the Antique Agriculture Festival, October 7-9, at the Murrell Home, and 2) We hope to set meeting dates, times & topics for the next 6 months.
There will certainly be be discussion about our crops. Many of us grow heirlooms, varieties which have been around for hundreds of years, or which were passed on through our families. Some also experiment with new crops, especially things that like heat! Here are pictures of two crops which George McLaughlin tried this summer, both are from the hibiscus family:
African okra, a different species of okra than generally grown in the United States. Notice the large flower. This is a cross between African okra and Heavy Hitter. Some plants are green and some have a red hue.
Roselle: another hibiscus, this one being used by a number of cultures, around the world, for making a delicious red colored tea, somewhat like our own North American cranberry juice.
