Finally had a pod to dry! What a joy! Just in time too, These high winds the last couple of days broke my cheap cord my beans were growing on. It was such a joy to find that pod! Lots of pods still to dry, this is just a peek because I’m so happy! Same picture of beans. Took one with inside lights, one taken outside.

I’ve seen a night or two of very light frosts. I’m supposed to get a few nights of 37ish degree nights this week, then back to mid 40’s and mid 50’s for the remainder of the week. I went ahead and cut my vines. Most of my pods look to have about 3 seeds, but I had a couple that are longer with 5 to 6 seeds. They weren’t completely dried down, but I’m hoping that will be sufficient. I’ve never grown beans in a bucket, but I’ll probably do it again because they were so very easy for me to care for. They didn’t thrive, but they didn’t die. All in all, I’m going to call this successful. I believe the grasshoppers were my main enemy they chewed up my vines and beans something fierce. I should still get somewhere around 20 to 35 beans once everything dries down. Plus the 5 I have drying in a bowl here in the house.
Next year, I will plant heavily because I want to eat some and also make some leather britches. I still have most of the beans George sent in the freezer for a back up in case I have a total failure as I have had with beans more times than I can count. I’ll most likely plant an early planting and a later planting as well. I might start them about a week earlier in July than I did this year.

George, My total count was better than I thought. So far my total seed count was 51, but I still have a few pods drying. Most of my bean pods had 3 seeds. I assume it’s because they were grown in less than ideal conditions.
I had 2 pods that had 5 beans in each pod. I am keeping those in a separate bowl. I only had one bean that was small like a pea. Most are nice sized like the ones you sent.
Next year I plan a better grow out. I will take the best of what I have and try to grow several tee pees. I also still have the remaining beans you sent in the freezer.

Sounds like it was due to conditions. Good job! I didn't grow Tennessee Cutshort this year. Must grow it next year. I always miss it when I don't but I can't grow every bean every year without having crossing issues. I really want to grow Spangler again. Cherokee Striped Cornhill has become a favorite, which I would also miss, and I'm working on the cross between Tennessee Cutshort and Cherokee Trail of Tears. These are all beans I really want to grow. Oh, additionally, I want to grow Frank Barnett again, and Childers Cutshort. I'm sure I will think of some others too! But Tennessee Cutshort is very high on the list.

I planted another bucket full Saturday evening. I used the seeds that were left on the vine from my grow out. At the end of the season, a couple of beans were not quite dry, so I pulled up the vine and put it in the shed. I saw the vine the other day and said to myself...”I never hulled those left over beans.” I hulled them real quick and planted all 13 in the same bucket as last year. It was just a spur of the moment planting.
My other saved seed is safe in the freezer.

Good deal! You did well with it last year. I need to plant some but it's a bit too cool here, yet. Keep us posted!

What a difference a day makes! Only 4 ungerminated seeds left! The rest will no doubt pop up tonight! Should I sit up all night and watch?

So far, 12 out of 13 are up. I’m pretty happy!
Last year I grew for seeds, but this year, I’m growing to eat. Of course I’ll save seeds as well, but my primary goal will be a pot of beans and fat back. Oh and some leather britches too.

Hindsight being 20/20, I kind of wish I had spread these seeds out into 2 buckets instead of 1. macmex Do you recon these are going to be too crowded? I got to set some new cord for them to climb. What I had them growing on last year gave me fits! It was just some cheap plastic rope. Once the sun got to it, it wasn’t worth a plug nickel.

I suspect they'll do better if you keep only two or three plants for a five gallon container. They are versatile though. Can't say for sure what they'd do if more crowded.
You know, I suspect they're still small enough it would be worth a try transplanting some to another bucket.
I need to get some planted soon!

I love bean seedlings. I don’t know if it’s because they grow so fast or start off so big, but they just make me happy. I also love it when pole beans start to climb.
My neighbors are trying to branch out a bit in their gardening, and so I helped them get started with some bush beans this week. I’ve only ever grown pole beans, so it will be interesting for me to observe how the bush beans grow. Their seedlings are just beginning to pop up now.
HmooseK, your seedlings look great, but I can’t really imagine what a jungle you’d have if all twelve grew up one string. How do you build the support?

HmooseK, your seedlings look great, but I can’t really imagine what a jungle you’d have if all twelve grew up one string. How do you build the support? I hate to admit it, but I never seem ready. I’m always scurrying around trying to cobble something together. This bucket here will grow on the same half dead plum tree as they did last year. I have a ton of those cheap tent stake and will run my cord up to the limbs and just let them go where they want. I really should have prepared them a better place, but here I is and there they are.
