Something is chewing the ends of my vine off. One vine had climbed up the string about 6’ or so. I noticed it had stopped climbing and upon closer examination, about the last 4” had been severed and was still twirled around the string.
Now get this, one bean plant is on the right side of the yard, the other is on the opposite end of the yard a good 100 feet apart. Both bean vines have been damaged in the same manner! I’m fighting mad! Grrrrr!
They were growing beautifully too!

Here in Oklahoma, I'd figure the culprit was a grasshopper (or several). Next guess would be a rabbit. Hopefully they will recover. One of my goats recently mowed my entire planting of Barksdale bean 😑

I was out gathering dill and squished about 20 big ol' yellow grasshoppers, all on one dill head. They congregate like that on my plants and destroy entire crops sometimes. I've had them eat my Candy variety onions all the way underground, leaving only the onion skin as testament there was ever an onion planted there.

Moose, I was thinking about your post this morning when I found the tips of my beans sawed off. The hopper was still sitting there atop the trellis, glaring at me in defiance. I notice that this one was locust-colored. (some hoppers have some pretty colors!)

It did slow them down, but I noticed a bloom today! Yea! I’ve got a few rusty leaves, but I’m hopeful. If I calculated right, 42 days after planting.

Still no pods and no new blossoms. We are having cool mornings in the high 60’s, so I am patiently waiting. Well...maybe not patiently, but you know. Hahahaaa! They have seemed to have stalled. They aren’t climbing anymore or should I say, don’t appear to be. I should still have a good 75+ days, so no worries. I’m mostly just checking in on you guys and trying to keep you updated.

Thanks for checking in and keeping us updated. It’s good to hear from folk even if it is just to report a “no harvest” crop. I’ve definitely had some of those this summer.

Grasshoppers bout to eat my vines bare, but there’s a ray of sunshine.

hmoosek, thanks, for sharing those recent photos. This time of year, every little thing seems golden, knowing how few days our gardens have left. I've been going out almost every morning while it's still cool outside and gathering grasshoppers off of my plants. When the temperatures drop into the 60s, they don't even attempt to jump. They don't begin to warm up until almost 9:00 am lately. I carry an old Pringles can and a pair of pruning shears with me whenever I go walking out there with the geese. When I catch a grasshopper, I cut off its head and throw it to the geese. They follow me wherever I go, hoping for another one.
I always put a few hoppers in the Pringles can for a goose with an injured leg. It's in rehab right now and needs the protein to heal faster. This time of year the hoppers are so big that they make a pretty good meal for my birds. I caught 102 grasshoppers a few days ago. I only have 9 geese. It took them quite a while to eat them all, but they finally got it done. There is a lot of satisfaction in that, after suffering so much grasshopper damage on days that it was too warm for me to catch them by hand. When it was still hot outside in the mornings, I'd shoot the hoppers with my little Daisy BB gun. There's a lot of satisfaction in that too, but not as much as catching them bare-handed on these cooler Fall mornings.

Good deal! I have some beans coming on. Am hoping to get seed. Most years it would be too late but this year... , maybe not.

hmoosek, I have a friend who swears that speaking to your legumes actually makes the plants grow better.
Yes, Jack and the beans talk.

Starting to see some filling out. I’m still hopeful. There’s lots of small pods. I didn’t try counting, but I’d say at least a dozen pods.
