On Saturday, April 23, 9:00 AM to Noon, Green Country Seed Savers will be meeting on the property of Tahlequah Lumber (1701Park Hill Road, Tahlequah). This will be our 2nd annual tomato cage building event. This is how it works:
We meet at the assigned time and location. Those who would like to get tomato cages pay the cost of just the wire needed to make however many they would like. As a group we purchase one roll of wire at a time, as needed. We roll the concrete reinforcing wire out and cut it to the necessary lengths, making whatever number of cages is desired. Individuals pay only for what they take home! Last year, the average cost of a 5’ tall tomato cage was under $5! These cages are superior to any cage one can purchase in a big box store. They will last for decades. Did you know that there are vigorous varieties of tomatoes which require a cage this large, and that there are no such cages available in most garden centers?
Green Country Seed Savers is a grass roots group of gardeners dedicated to helping others find success in gardening and especially, to learn how to propagate food plants for themselves. We’re “seed savers” in that we reproduce the seed of most of the food plants we grow. This promotes resiliency in the life of the gardener and his/her community. It also makes it possible to enjoy far more varieties can can commonly be purchased in garden centers.
Beside making cages we will likely have members present offering some excess tomato plants. A few members produce transplants for market and may be selling them, others may be giving some away. There are likely to be some seeds present and looking for new homes.
Come on out! Meet great people. Encounter uncommon vegetable varieties
