I like to keep a bucket of water full of weeds and grass to feed some of my growies, like cabbage. And since I have it nearby, the squash plant gets an occasional feed as well.
If you fill a bucket with water and weeds and grass and let it sit for a few days, it becomes nasty stinky to the point I want to hold my nose.
As you all know, I don’t just have squash bugs, I have HOARDS of squash bugs every year. Any attempt at growing c. Pepo, c. Maxima (and sometimes other species) is futile. Only c. Moschata with a good root system at x plant and constant picking on my part yields a healthy plant and fruit.
I decided last spring to x plant some c pepo crooked neck squash knowing I”ll pull it quickly and probably only get one mutilated fruit, if that. This year, I have 3 of these plants and they are all still alive more than 2 mos later. I’ve harvested two good clean fruit from these plants. I have picked and cleaned the plant and even killed adult squash bugs a couple times, but mostly I don’t bother with it since I am biased against probabilities of success.
It is purely opinion, but I think the squash bugs are offended by the smell of the swamp goo. Their numbers are lower this year, probably from a cumulative effect of climate but even on low number years, a c pepo squash wouldn’t make it two weeks after x plant.
