Recently I discovered Dragonfruit. It was available at our local discount market, so I tried some. They had yellow ones, (Selenicereus megalanthus) and red ones, (Selenicereus costaricensis), so I tried both. The yellow ones were sweet and delicious. The red ones were kinda bland but tart. It was confusing since the red ones were twice the price of the yellow. They are rarely available, so I did some homework. I looked them up on wikipedia on Dragonfruit. It was very interesting. I immediately sowed some of the small black seed of each type, they quickly germinated and are growing nicely. I need to pot them up, soon.
My challenge will be to find a way to plant them outside, yet protect them from frost. As has been suggested, perhaps I can grow them in pots and move them in and out during the winter (late November to late January). I've also heard of other ways to protect them from frost. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it both ways, since it seems very easy to start more plants as needed, you just need to find a fruit at the market - bingo, fresh seed.
