St John's Wort grows in abundance across the dirt road from our house. It usually blooms very near the Summer Solstice, more specifically, June 24th, the day John the Baptist was said to be born.
This plant has medicinal properties, but I gather it mostly because it smells so much like maple syrup, that people often ask if there are pancakes cooking when I place the bright yellow flowers around my wife's office.
This plant is fairly easy to identify but would take me pages to explain, so I'll reference the following website instead. (One picture is worth a thousand words). This website has lots of pictures.

One of the easiest ways to identify this plant is to crush the yellow flowers between your fingers and the petals will leave a red stain, said to represent the blood of John the Baptist.
