Last Saturday a baby Sonoran Desert Tortoise appeared at the bottom of our wheelchair ramp. It looked like --> I almost stepped on it. Thank goodness I didn't. Fortunately, a few days later I was able to deliver it to the Sonoran Desert Museum, where they operate a sanctuary and adoption program. It's only a few miles South of my location. For many reasons they cannot safely be returned to the wild.

When I was dropping the tortoise off, they were having a class, teaching a young woman how to properly care for her newely adopted charge. It was a much older tortoise than the one I was dropping off, and, much less attractive.
I overheard some of the lessons, one in particular, about how one of their most favorite foods was hibiscus/okra/roselle blossoms. I wish I had known that, while the baby was waiting at my house.

I’m glad you were able to get him to a good situation. Interesting that they like the hibiscus/okra/roselle blossoms so much. Does Rose of Sharon grow out there? I just recently learned that it’s in the same family, but I don’t think I ever saw any during my time in Texas.

I don't know about Tucson's area but Rose of Sharon grows really well in Oklahoma. It's almost a weed at times. I love the flowers (think they're beautiful). For some reason my wife doesn't. She's always wanting me to cut them down. Several Rose of Sharon came with our place and they are difficult to erradicate. I have new seedlings pop up all the time.
I read a bit more about this tortoise. Apparently they raise a lot of them in captivity.

Hey Tucson, if you ever find yourself with excess of these type flowers, maybe they would accept your donation. Just a thought.
