I'm starting this thread as a place you can show off your favorite knives, for whatever you use then for. (Broad topic) For the moment I'm only going to post about one knife, the one my wife gave me for Christmas about a week ago (12/2022). It's a full sized "Trapper." That's the style. I always wanted one when I was a teen, but the full size Trapper was always a little more expensive than I wanted to pay. I ended up with other good and more economical knives. Anyway, she purchased this knife in Newport, RI in May of 2022, when our extended family met there to remember my parents, both of whom passed away in 2020. There never was a memorial service until we made it happen in Newport. We did it in Newport because my parents met there and my father's mother lived there until the end of her days. Our family has many happy memories of Newport. In fact, when I was growing up we had MANY relatives there.
Jerreth purchased the knife in a scrimshaw shop along with enough materials to learn and practice some scrimshaw. Ivory is no longer sold. The handle of this knife is white bone. She also purchased some tropical nuts, whose innards resemble ivory, making pendants for a number of our family members.
For weeks we have passed many enjoyable evenings, sitting at the table, after supper, and working with our hands. I would be shelling acorns and Jerreth was doing scrimshaw. Of course, I never saw this knife. She worked on that when I wasn't around!
This is a thread to show off any knife you like.

If you mentioned it to me... I forgot. However I looked it up and gave her a link. She's already excited about it! Moose, you and Woodeye are "bad influences" on my wife!

That's pretty cool, George. That one's a keeper for sure!
I used to collect scrimshaw knives, but our house was robbed back in the '80s and they were all stolen. I'm still a fan, but never invested in replacements.

Boy the 80's were tough around here too, I got hit twice during that decade, lost two 4-wheelers, tool boxes, chainsaws, & fishing rods & reels. It's downright dirty when somebody steals your fishin' pole...

Thank you, macmex . That's the way I took it, it's all in fun... Same! I knew exactly what you meant macmexso many hobbies, so little time. Ain’t that right, woodeye? I will add…Women in general, tend to be better at some things like gun checkering, Scrimshaw, Kolrosing, Etc. Probably because they have better patience. I once thought I’d like to checker and basketweave carve gunstocks. I wasn’t very good at it. Of course I was in the 8th grade and my patience was poor! Those outdoor life books and Jim Carmichel made everything look so easy! Somewhere stashed away is my favorite Carmichel book and my Gun Checkering kit.

Hmoosek,
Your gun checkering kit sounds a lot like my leather working kit. I thought once upon a time, I'd really enjoy tooling leather. (That was about the 8th grade too) then, along came all the lacing that it takes to put a wallet together and I was done ... I did make myself a pretty comfy pair of boots once though, but when the soles finally wore out, it was the same old thing ... I didn't have the patience to sew another sole back on, so it was only a 'one-off' project for me.

Nothing ever comes of ill-gotten gain. People would be good to realize that, but I guess some of them just have to figure that out on their own ...

The first knife I will show is one of my favorites. Actually just about every knife I own is one of my favorites. No, seriously I just love knives. I call this a bolt knife. I forget the actual name. I think it’s something like Ontario Airforce Pilot survival knife. I think that’s pretty close. It’s a Bolt knife, look at the pommel. I’ve had a lot of fun in the woods with it. It was strapped on my belt on my last walk about.

heavyhitterokrawoodeyeWhen I got old enough to be responsible, my Uncle gave me his military knife he carried in the Philippines. I was driving by then and being from a small town, we never bothered locking our doors on house or cars. Some low life must have seen it sitting on my front seat and decided he needed it more than me. I was both sick and heartbroken. today it still bothers me that I didn't take better care of it. On another note, when we moved into an RV and then into this tiny cabin, I had to pack a lot of my personal belongings up and store them because we ain’t got room enough to cuss a cat. I kept out the knives I use the most and packed away the rest. Ron, The only thing I can remember making from leather is a strop and a very simple 3” sheath for a carving knife.

Here is the knife I was talking about in Rick’s thread. My Kid Sister gave to me as a Christmas present back in the late 70’s. I think it was around 78. I remember her bugging Mom to take her Christmas shopping as she was still in elementary school but wanted to “give” us all presents. I’m pretty sentimental, so I’ve kept it all these years in my camping duffel bag. I used it mostly for food prep when I camped. A few years ago, I put a razor edge on it and begun using it has a boning/butcher knife. I’m surprised, but it works quite well. You have to be careful with it cause it does bite. I darn near sliced my finger off a few months ago. I had finished slicing some meat. I had already packaged the meat, put it away and was cleaning my knife. Somehow during drying it to put it away, I ran my index down the length of it. It wasn’t a pretty site and my Sister had to bandage me up. It actually needed stitches, but she fixed me up with her med kit.
