Good morning folks. I'm looking for stuff being grown by the Gullah in Louisiana since I have ancestral connections over there from my dad's side. You all heard of the Yellow Creole corn from the western side of the Southeast? It used to be an indigenous type from Cuba, but it has been imported north by the French through the Caribbean to the shores of the southeast where it became a deliacy by many negro settlers and Creoles till 1950. Did the Gullah had the yellow corn back then in their former homelands back then? Did they also have eggplant or purple squash, black-eye peas, squash, kidney beans, tobacco, greens, sweet potatoes, peanuts, sorghum, okra, watermelon and others that were well know and documented in Louisiana back then? I've only found heirloom crops from the east side of the Southeast, but I wanna focus on the west side of that area for the Gullah. I'm looking for more folks that have been tied to the Louisiana Gullah on this website or anywhere to help me find the right type of crops that were suited to the time period when they used to inhibit. If there's any of you, please be free to jump in to tell your story and stuff and go from there. Have a good day!
