My fiend says it's a pipevine swallowtail.

I think your friend is right. I’m better at identifying the Swallowtails from the top, but I just looked up a handy reference page that I use that compares the ventral view of a black swallowtail and a pipeline, and this one matches pipevine. They are a pretty iridescent blue on top, and I see them a lot down here in Texas. www.butterfliesathome.com/black-swallowtail-butterfly-comparison.htmhmoosek, you took a nice picture. Thanks for sharing it with us.

What a beautiful photo! It's as if that butterfly was posing for that picture.
Is that a sage plant that it's resting on?

heavyhitterokraIt’s a Purple Vitex Chaste tree. Well, it’s supposed to be a tree, ours is a big bush.

I don’t think they’re really supposed to be trees in the single-trunked sense. I’ve never seen any that aren’t big bushes. Maybe some really selective pruning could achieve it, but it’s certainly not the natural form.

heavyhitterokra It’s a Purple Vitex Chaste tree. Well, it’s supposed to be a tree, ours is a big bush. That sure is a beautiful blossom. That's a new one on me. I've never heard of a Vitex Chaste Tree before. I'll have to look that one up. It looks like I've learned of another one of God's beautiful creations. Thanks, for posting that.

I've seen that Vitex is quite popular among beekeepers in and around Oklahoma City and Tulsa. They're considered a good nectar crop in hot weather. There are some locales that prohibit planting them, however, as they spread easily by seed. If I had one, I'd plant it though.
