Well, many of us have ties to New Jersey, it seems. My father was born and raised in southern NJ - Cape May Court House to be exact. I spent the Summer there when I was six. Built many a sand castle on the beach at Stone Harbor, lol.

Beans of 2022
And, with two exceptions, what a terrible year it was. One bean that did well was French Gold. I posted HERE about it. The other was Old Fashioned Whipporwill, which I'll discuss in another post.
Other than that, bean growing and seedsaving was a complete bust in 2022. Heat, drought, insects - all were relentless.
Out of five other varieties (almost 50 row feet), this is the total seed saved. Two of the five varieties didn't even get a chance to mature pods. Well, at least I harvested enough seed from these three to give them another shot.

Even though it’s not what you hoped for, I do have to say that those are some mighty fine looking seeds. What kinds are they?

I feel your pain Rdback. I didn't get a single bean plant past the grasshoppers last Summer. Not a single one ...

Yeah. It was so bad, I feel traumatized. All that watering, all those pretty bean leaves, the blossoms on the ground and the horror of the aftermath all the way through October, I believe? SHEESH

lol, thanks Chrys! They are lookers aren't they, haha. Let's see, I think there's Sunset runner bean, Worchester Indian Red Pole Lima and Kelvedon Marvel runner bean. I think I just about broke even on number of seeds planted vs number of seeds saved.

I got seed from a few but not a whole lot. Even Woods Mtn. Crazy Bean only returned a little seed and hardly any eating. 2022 was really bad, and it's hard to figure all the reasons why. Sure hope we make up for it this year.

Paquebot Roma
And here's the last tomato. It's a (semi)determinate paste developed by Martin Longseth. Good flavor, meaty with very few seeds, good production. Makes a really tasty sauce.

That looks very nice, @rdback. I recognize the name “Paquebot” from various reading and research on the internet. I remember that he had some pretty detailed posts about his growing. He seemed quite passionate about it.

Yes chrysanthemum , Martin was an avid gardener. In the 90's he was mainly focused on tomatoes. It is said he saved Wisconsin 55 from extinction. He also developed several tomatoes, including this paste. In the early 2000's, he also dove into the world of garlic, becoming quite the expert. In fact, when macmex had an anomaly occur in his elephant garlic, I contacted Martin about it. We discussed it HERE. RIP Martin.

Cowpea - Old Fashioned WhipporwillThis variety of Whipporwill was grown by Perry Childress in Albertville, Alabama. I obtained these seeds while attending the Heritage Harvest Festival at Monticello in 2017. The vendor was Sand Mountain Seed Bank, based in northeast Alabama. It took me five years to get around to growing them, but am glad I finally did.
In the face of all of 2022's growing season challenges, this cowpea didn't even blink. It powered right through all the heat, drought and insect problems with flying colors. One arched cattle panel of plants generated about 1.25 pounds of seed. Not too shabby.
If you're looking for a good cowpea to grow, this one would be a good choice.
And coincidentally, on top this successful grow story, I have run out of harvest photos from 2022. Glad to end on a positive note. And since folks are starting to plan their gardens for 2023, timing wasn't too bad either.
I hope all of us have a successful (and fruitful) 2023 gardening season. Happy Growing!
