chrysanthemumOh ok, I gotcha. I deleted my new knife picture. I’m going to insert it in my knife thread so I don’t take away from Rick’s thread. I didn’t think about it before I added. I’m sure he doesn’t mind, but still.

Beautiful harvest, Rick. Those Russian tomatoes usually will set late (or early). Did you find that to be true with this Olga’s?
It did set a little "late" Frosty, but most of my plants did this year due to heat and humidity. I think it WANTED to set earlier, just couldn't.

hmoosek , what’s the story with the knife, if you don’t mind my asking?
Now like most folks, I appreciate a good paring knife. So I thought about it and concluded that if you ever hear an accomplished whittler talk nicely about a knife, you should heed their advice, so I did.
And I'm sure glad I did! Every time I'm in the kitchen I use this knife, 9 times outta 10. Great little knife!
Thanks buddy!

Wow, I agree, amyinowasso , saw that it was the same tomato knife that I use. I looked at my receipt, I had bought 2 of them in 2018 for $5.59. Today's price: $28.08 for 2 of them... They're a good knife, but I wouldn't pay today's prices for the things...

Thanks for responding. Sorry, my mind is still trying to push ‘normal’. Forgot the weather has been weird.

@rdback oh yes, I love those. They are not a super steel or anything. In fact, they are pretty soft, but they also strop back to razor sharpness in less than a minute. They are so danged handy. My baby girl dachshund knows when I grab my red knife, Its apple snack time.

@rdback If I ever do a through hike, I’ll have a custom kydex made for it and wear it around my neck. It’s about the lightest knife you could hope for. Besides, I use a knife to cut things, I don’t beat on them like a monkey beating a transmission.

Links are acting funny lately - sometimes they work, sometimes not. Your link didn't work for me either but, after trying it two or three times, it did. Weird.
Anyway, this is the set of knives hmoosek recommended.

Rutger's Tomato
And of course, you haven't had a tomato until you've eaten a 'Jersey tomato. Just ask anyone from New Jersey lol. Although forever debatable, most folks think it is none other than......
Rutger's! Great tasting tomato.

I grew up in NJ. The conditions there are about perfect for tomatoes. I believe this contributes to the "Jersey tomato" belief. However, varieties also play in. Rutgers has that wonderful acidic tomato flavor, which is what I prefer. Other varieties, I've tried, which share this kind of flavor are Sioux and Baker Family Heirloom. I suspect Jet Star, a hybrid also has it.

Those knives can be had for about 4 to 5 dollars. You will see them listed sometimes for more, but if you holdout, they runs sales at different places. Most of mine came from ebay, but I’ve seen them listed in several sites. They are made by the same company as Swiss army knives. I bought a package of 6 the last time I ordered. My original knife is Red, but Wife would swipe it, Mom was swipe it, I could never find it. Finally, I just ordered them a set of 6 each.
My butcher knife came from my kid Sister Christmas of 78. It’s a K-Mart special made in Japan. Its a Sharp DF60. In that time frame, you wouldn’t expect it to be good quality, but it takes and holds a razor edge. The handle is made of what looks like teak wood. and has ts actually a filet knife, but I use it as a butcher knife as we buy whole sirloin, bone in hams, etc. it gets quite the workout. I don’t think they are made any longer, but I see them on the bay from time to time. Its stainless steel. I don’t know if ATS 34 was made way back then or not, but it sure seems to be in the same group with its edge retention.
I’ll try to snap a photo later today.

Rutger's have been around a long time, even longer than me. I can remember by dad always planted those when I was kid back in the 60's. Excellent tomato, they look great, rdback . It may be time to try them again here...
