My Lakota Squash is starting to ripen (turning orange). They start off yellow (not green) as babies. In the old days they were mostly very dark green. I would like to find seeds of one that is mostly dark green if anyone ever has one. I have the cage over it to protect from animals (I hope). Its a lot larger than I expected it to be--maybe 12" diameter.

That is looking great, june. Good idea on the cage, the hungry critters never seem to rest, or know when to push away from the dinner table...

Woodeye--That's how I know when things are ripe--I go out and find them missing or holes ripped in the side...I'm trying to stay a step ahead of them.

Good thinking, june. I wonder if the current inflation rate has affected the price of critter pelts? If not, it needs to...

Actually, I don't think my squash is purebred...the shape is wrong and not nearly enough green. I bought the seeds packaged for 2020 (just got some planted this year)...Baker Creek did not carry them this year.

Guess you have the right to name your new variety, how about LaJuna?

June, I don't think your Lakota could be crossed with your pumpkin patch, since pumpkins are C. peop and the Lakota is C. maxima. They naturally cant cross. If you bought the seed from Bakers Creek, there's a fair chance that its just bad seed. I use to be a seed grower for them. In recent years they've really stopped focusing on quality. Thats why I stop growing for them and no longer buy from them.
Another thought: how is your Cherokee Sallu Yah corn growing?

Hi Midwesterner, I was joking about the 'pumpkin patch'...LOL...I don't have anything else except the one 'round' squash. I bought the seeds two years ago, but not plant any until this year...whatever it is crossed with, happened before I bought the seeds...It is the wrong color, size and shape so I believe the seeds were crossed--no idea what.
In regard to my Cherokee Sallu-yah corn--it is all picked, dried and waiting to be shelled. I was disappointed in the poor pollination but the temperatures were extremely high the whole month (like 110 degrees plus) which can affect corn pollination. I don't know whether to blame the corn or the weather. Also, I had a problem with animals. LOL...After all that, I have still have plenty of seeds to share with anyone that want some.

It something'er'other. My first guess was a cross with a Buttercup, but it is hard to say. Still might make a good pie filling. Yeah, I'm interested in that variety. We can trade--I've got a large Cherokee seed collection (I'm Cherokee). I first saw it on the USDA database, but I know from experience that I wasn't going to be able to get it. I'll send you a message.
