Well, yesterday was different. The cattle got into my garden and to the casual glance, it looked like they wiped out my sweet potatoes. Fortunately, I'm sure this is not the case.
Here's a link to more details over on The Sweet Potato Network. The Sweet Potato Network

macmex , I just read your linked thread, and I congratulate you on the equanimity with which you’re facing this setback. I’m looking forward to some updated photos in a couple of weeks to show how the sweet potatoes recover. The cow and calf looked very healthy, by the way. They’re beauties.

George,
That is so frustrating!
I remember once when we were kids growing up, we had no air conditioner, so the windows were always open at night. It was not uncommon to hear the cows grazing right up to the side of the house, as we had no fence around our yard to keep them out. One night, I was laying there listening to the cattle quietly grazing past my bedroom window, then it sounded like they were crunching something a lot louder than grass. It was making a squeaking sound as they pulled it up, rather than a munching, softly, ripping sound like grass makes. I got up out of bed and walked to the door with a flashlight to see what they were doing, only to find that they had trampled the garden gate and were madly munching and trampling my sweet corn stalks to the ground!
That was a sickening sound, to hear all of your season's hard work being destroyed in one night by a herd of wandering cattle.

Man, I tell ya' what heavyhitterokra , that's just awful. Makes me glad I can't hear such as that, but seeing the result of the cattle's feeding frenzy in the garden the next day would still be the same for me unfortunately...

George, I can relate to your situation. Last year, the deer kept mine eaten completely to the ground. I still got a fair number of sweet potatoes...Yours are probably near ready to dig by mid Sept. I'm getting anxious to start peeking. I'll bet you have tons of sweet potatoes under there. Good luck!

I didn't get a picture of it but last night I noticed that all the vines had leafed out anew. Within a week I should start harvest.

macmex, I just now looked at the picture of the regrowth of your sweet potato vines over on the sweet potato network. Also saw a picture of some of your 2019 crop that you had harvested. WOW!
Everything is looking outstanding, I imagine the fun of digging this year's crop is very near...

In years past, I've grown sweet potatoes here that weighed in excess of 10 pounds each, but this year, the deer and the grasshoppers were relentless. There were times when my vines were eaten so close to the ground that you could hardly tell where they were planted. This year, I got absolutely nothing. These are this year's vines.
These are this year's sweet potatoes. I sure hope George's had time to recuperate after the cows got ahold of his vines. Mine never got over the trauma of being eaten to the ground so many times.
These were some I grew in 2015.
These were some I grew in 2019.
These are some I grew in 2015.
These are the same ones, just to show how knotted up they were before I seperated them. They were a booger to dig up that year! This year was a total bust.

heavyhitterokra, that is just depressing to see the ruination of your sweet potato crop by the deer and grasshoppers. So sorry that happened. But boy in the years past you have has the goods! Hopefully next year will bring about better times for you and not the critters and insects...
