That made me laugh. I think I’ll end up thinking it when I see that watermelon from now on, too.

That's a great idea, Crysanthemum. I had a pumpkin here a few years ago that grew up a chain link fence and set fruit. I build a wooden rest from an old window casing for it to sit on until it ripened. What you did there would have been a lot more economical, but it was still fun to see it grow that way and that saved the fruit from ruin. Kind of like rescuing a puppy from the pound, it just gives one a good feeling to know that you could help it survive a hardship.
Thanks, for posting that.

It’s still hanging in there, but I don’t know that it’s growing all that much. I actually took out two watermelon plants on the far end of the trellis the other day. They were wilted one afternoon rather badly, so I gave them some emergency water. They did not perk up, however, as much as I had hoped. I gave them another good watering the next morning, and they did improve, but I was worried about their harboring a virus or bacterium that was causing the wilting, so I took them out. One didn’t have any fruit anyway. The other one had a couple nice fruits, but even they looked as though they had lost water, so I pulled the entirety of both plants, bagged them, and put them in the trash. I didn’t trust them to go in my compost. I hope this melon will get bigger. We love a good watermelon around here, but I haven’t had a lot of success growing them myself even before this amazingly difficult gardening summer.

I just wanted to report that I harvested this little watermelon two days ago, and we ate it yesterday. The garden bed where it was planted was getting dug up repeatedly by a garden invader, and I didn’t want to lose the fruit. It was only about two pounds, but it was tasty. The same day I also harvested our second volunteer canteloupe (from a not thoroughly composted seed). I had images in my head of june ‘s fruit with holes in it, and I didn’t have a way to protect it. It was tiny, just over a pound, but also good. I have some children who prefer canteloupe, others watermelon, so we just cut them them both and mixed and matched according to preference for a late afternoon snack yesterday.

Chrysanthemum, I hope your melons were delicious! Melons are one thing where I am successful. We've had all we can eat, plus I give some away and the animals got plenty...The dark green one is a 'Sugar Baby' (or they were 3 or 4 years ago). The light striped ones are Hopi yellow. We have been keeping the refrigerator full and plenty replacements nearby. My melons in the garden are about finished. I have not planted melons in 3 years...I just throw my melon trash over the fence and they plant themselves...has been working great for me. Sometimes we get orangish or strange colors because they have mixed--but always super sweet and juicy.

Those are nice ones, june. The one you gave me the other day was very good, it was a mixture of yellow and orange, sort of a peach color. Tasty!

Very nice melons! I’m not too successful on watermelon, but Cantaloupe does great here. Go figure

Here's my 'Crimson Sweet', all my others are yellow fruited. I'm thinking I should give mine something to climb on. I inserted the drip emitter to guide the vine.
