Wonderful news! How do you know when to pick the one that got pollinated? I don't really know, chrysanthemum, but as tender and tasty as those were for supper tonight, it is not going to stay on the vine much longer. I'll do the tale of the tape again in the morning, but it will likely be on my kitchen counter shortly after that...

I forgot to mention it yesterday, and this thread is moving so fast, it looks out of place now, but when our kids were little we would pick squash blossoms, dip them in egg and fry them. Then, as we finished frying them, we'd coat them with powdered sugar. That was a special breakfast treat for our family.
In Mexico they add squash flowers to stews and I'm sure that somebody, somewhere, uses them in stir fries.

I also think it was one or more of your posts of the past, that you said you had stopped growing zucchini and such, in favor of young Moschata squash, which are used as a person would use summer squash. Your ideas on that have made me a convert, I endorse that idea 100% without reservation. I picked this delicacy this morning, a nice Tromboncino that I did not want to risk losing somehow, or letting it start to toughen up. Tromboncino is more tender than the Early Bulam is, the Tromboncino is melt in your mouth tender...

Interesting, Woodeye, I grew tromboncino years ago and didn't like it. I may have been picking it too late. I'm not a big fan of summer squash anyway. I liked Early Bulam, especially slices grilled over charcol. I let some of the tromboncino fully mature but flavor didn't impress me. It's a shame because they do grow long fast.

amyinowasso, It could be that they were too mature, definitely a possibility. The ones I had for supper were only a few days old. The one I picked this morning is one day older, so I'll know more about it tonight. I also have something to compare it to now, I met june this morning, she gave me a couple of the Chinese Serpent squash. I'll be trying those soon too.
I know what you mean, some people are not big fans of squash, I just happen to really enjoy them. I've tried 2 of the Early Bulam, I liked the first one best because it was a bit less mature than the 2nd one was. However, they were both very good...

King Edward Cigar! Oh my, I haven’t seen one in ages. We used to sell those things for a nickel at the service station. I think that was the price, it’s been a few decades. Every old man you saw either had a mouthful of tobaccy or a cigar/cigarette hanging out their mouth. Not every old man, but most of the loafers that hung around the station telling lies and swapping stories. Hahahahaaa

King Edward Cigars----LOL wonderful memories--I never did smoke, but I would kill to get my hands on empty cigar boxes...use to LOVE to keep things in them. The box was better than the contents.

Same here, hmoosek, when I was 16 I worked at a little gas station close to the interstate, the owner's dad would come in to visit every day, I never once saw him without a King Edward cigar in his mouth.

When I was a kid, there used to be a "Sittin' and Spittin' club just outside the old County Courthouse in Tahlequah. The meetings were usually held near the corner on the Northwest end of the lot, under an old oak tree, on the park bench that used to be there. Mostly old men like Hmoosk mentioned above. They didn't much tolerate the young-ins around there, but I'd squat on one knee at a safe distance and listen to a few of their tales while mama was inside filing papers and deeds.

All my relatives 'rolled their own'. Even my very religious little grandmother dipped snuff (didn't smoke.)...I'm talking about back in the 50's...it was commonplace.

My grandma on my dad's side of the family dipped Garrett's snuff, but I didn't know she did until I was a teenager. When I was younger, us kids would catch her with some type of substance in her mouth and ask her what it was, "oh it's candy", she'd say. Of course we'd want some of that "candy", but she always came up with excuses to not give us any of it, like "You'll ruin your supper", and so forth. She was quite a character...

woodeye. Me and snuff never got along. My uncle gave me some white label Garrett’s when I was a teen. That stuff tasted like dirt. I actually think dirt tasted better! Then a buddy of mine gave me a dip of Copenhagen. I got dizzy and nearly threw my toenails up. I signed off tobaccy right there. Occasionally my buddy would give me a Wolf Brother cigar, so I could chew on it and look cool, but I didn’t smoke it.

hmoosek, I bet I wasn't more than 5 years old when this happened, but I remember finding a cute little tin can of something or other on my dad's nightstand. I guess that's where he emptied his pockets most of the time. Well I had to get that cute little tin can opened up so that I could get a closer look-see. Which, even though I was a young-in, I got it opened (no such thing as 'child proof' back in those days) and held it up to my eyes real close. I must have inhaled enough of the mystery substance that it coated the inside of my nose, because I still remember, vividly, the various symptoms of being way too curious about something that was none of my business to begin with. Symptoms included, but were not limited to, crying, sneezing, twitching, rash, crying some more, running, & screaming. I don't remember fainting, but I do remember wishing I could faint. Anyway, my dad dipped Garrett's snuff too, but I never again in my life opened another one of those 'cute little tin cans'...
