I’ve never even seen one. You get past bluegill, catfish, crappie, bass and I’m pretty dumb fish wise. I did catch a few halibut and on a trip to Alaska, but it was completely foreign to me as I’m mostly a bank/fly fisherman. By the time I had pulled that halibut 100+ feet up, I was tired! Too much work for me. We were allowed 2 each I think. It’s been a long time ago. I guess it was sort of fun, it was an adventure for sure. Something I’ll probably never get a chance to do again, so I’m glad I was able to experience it. I will say halibut was mighty tasty. We cooked some at the campground there Valdez. The campground was amazing! They had tame rabbits running all over the campground. I enjoyed watching the rabbits more than going out on that boat to fish.
Now, I’ll tell you something I’d like to experience. You know how they ice fish in those little huts up North? I think I’d like to do that someday.

Sturgeon are a prehistoric fish that have cartilage instead of bones like other fish do. I've never seen a live one.
Years ago when I was on a fishing forum, there was guy that lived up in Wyoming that ice fished a lot. He'd post pictures of his ice shanty that he sat inside to fish for various kinds of fish. I remember that he couldn't stand the heat of the day because he had lived in cool and cold temps all his life, if the temperature got into the 80's he suffered. He used one of those itty bitty rod and reels and the fancy hook setting attachment so that when a fish bites, it releases and the rod flips up and sets the hook. It's too cold out there to take your boots off and wrap your line around your big toe so you'll know when you get a bite, so you gotta use one of these.
Up north they have yellow perch, which is a real perch, much different fish than the sunfish that we call perch around here. I'll stick with calling ours perch too, I never felt comfortable calling a perch a sunfish. Also walleye, another great fish for eating. I have not seen a yellow perch from the north, but I have caught and eaten walleye from the lower Illinois river. They are definitely some good eating too.

I’ve always called sunfish “perch” too, but when you post something like that on a forum, there’s always some jack rabbit to point out the proper name. Same way when talking about undercooked steak. If you say it’s bloody, some turkey will point it out to you that it’s really not blood. Hahahahaaa. My Sister tells me the older I get the more crankier I get. I suppose it’s true, because I’ve noticed it myself.
I’m talking in general about different forums, NOT this one. We are small enough to have like minded/well mannered individuals here.

hmoosek I think the squirrel looks great as well! So, now all kinds of questions come to mind. You said this is balsa wood. What other woods do you work with? I always thought you grabbed a stick and started curving lol. Do you start with a block of wood, a chunk of log, or a round branch? How thick of wood do you work with? Is it seasoned or green? Didn't you say you're allergic to some kinds of wood? I guess that limits what you can choose from. Lastly, I think you should start a thread that talks about woodcarving, including pictures of your pieces. They are really cool!

rdback The pecan is balsa. All my (most all) my carving wood is basswood. I buy 1x1x12, all the way up to whatever I can get. I’ve carved sticks before, but I’m careful because I’m allergic to several woods. I made a coffee spoon out of hackberry and I sneezed and wheezed for days on end. Any good closed grain wood will work as long as your tools are sharp. Of course those woods are harder to carve than good basswood. For me, Northern Basswood is real nice! I’ll start a thread and we can talk wood carving. the squirrel was started with 1 1/2x1 1/2”x 3”. Working on the corner, stretched it out to 2” wide.
