Photo Update August 29th. Coming right along. That’s glass gem corn growing with it. We’ll see how it does. Fabulous Idea or Bone headed idea? Not sure yet.

Everything looks happy, so I bet it will be fine. One thing's for sure, you'll never know 'til you try...

Those are looking really good, HMooseK.
Is your soil what they call “black gumbo”? I’ve read about it, but it’s definitely not around here. We’ve got caliche. I may be wrong, but yours looks great to me.

chrysanthemumYes, it’s black land gumbo. You stick with it when it’s dry, it’s stick to you when it’s wet. You walk across the garden when it’s wet and you gain 3 inches in height with each step.

That sounds like the land south of mine, except it's Red Gumbo. It's horrible stuff, gums up everything, plus also gets slick when it's wet. But it's like an acme brick when it dries out.
Luckily this place I live on is far from being as bad as the place south of me, but it's still not ideal in some areas. Some of those areas look like Australia, some look like the heart of Africa, and some are no-man's land...

woodeyeIt’s pretty good farmland and will grow most anything. It cracks real bad though.

Yeah, that's the other difference besides color, red gumbo won't grow much of anything except cedar trees, at least on that place. I tried several times to have a garden down there, FAIL. Had to build raised beds...

I lived on a Turkey Farm out in West Texas the other side of Brownwood. We called that place No Man’s land. Wasn’t anything out there but Rattlesnakes, Horny Toads and Cougars. I’ve never seen so many snakes in all my life! I was only there for about 3 months.

You have officially convinced me, I do not want to trade my No Man's land for that, unless the only stipulation was that I would have an abundance of Horny Toads. I'm not really Rattlesnake or Cougar friendly. Speaking of Horny Toads though, I miss having Horny Toads around here like I did when I was a kid. I haven't seen one in ages...

Yes, it’s been years since I saw one too! Fire ants maybe…I dunno.

First I heard a theory that people kept too many of the horny toads as pets and that led to their demise.
Then I heard a theory that house cats ate up all the horny toads.
Then I heard a theory that coyotes ate up all the house cats.
Well, there's still house cats around, and there's still coyotes around, but there ain't no horny toads around.
So it's all beyond the scope of stuff that I know much about...

Yes, I don’t have a clue. I know when I was a kid, they were plentiful. So were Jack Rabbits.
