How are ya! I've been preserving old American and American Indian heirloom varieties for a long time. I have also been developing new varieties in recent years--things like green beans, corn, soybeans, and cucurbits. It's just what I like to do (I'm not paid to do it). I'm a Cherokee and collect American Indian varieties, but not involved with the 'give us back our indigenous seed', 'racial injustice' or 'indigenous food-insecurity' talk! This probably sounds far-out, but one day, I'd like to oust the USDA gene-bank in quality, usefulness, and humility. I got a lot of work still ahead of me yet. Finally, I also really like to collect history and cultural 'ways-of-life' of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Southern Michigan. I'm currently writing a document on old ways of life. Recipes, stories, 'this-is-how-I-was-raised', &c. My other hobbies are fishing and studying weather. (editied--my profile photo is my favorite fishing lake near Kendallville Indiana)

Welcome! Glad to have you with us! My wife and I lived and gardened in Winona Lake, Indiana for a few years in the early 80s. Apart from the winter, we loved it there! I look forward to hearing about some of your seed saving projects. Sounds great!

Welcome, Midwesterner. You’ve found a good place here to share your passion for growing crops and seeds. We also just enjoy sharing stories, too. I’d love to know more about your gardens and growing space and techniques.

Welcome, Midwesterner. You’ve found a good place here to share your passion for growing crops and seeds. We also just enjoy sharing stories, too. I’d love to know more about your gardens and growing space and techniques. Sorry for my slow reply chrysanthemum! I've got a small garden at home. Its enough space to produce enough food for a fair amount of canning and freezing. I also rent a few fields around the area, and there I produce seed and do breeding projects. Currently I'm working on 3 field projects, a gametophytic incompatible (cross-pollination resistant) corn, a weed suppressing/resistant (or cover crop tolerant) and gametophytic incompatible corn and a cross-resistant Soybean. I mainly do theses projects to produce varieties that farmers don't need to spry or at least minimally. To save time, money and resources. Also to minimize GM contamination for organic farmers. At my home garden, I'm developing 2 green bean varieties; one called 'Latta Lake' green bean and 'Golden Lake' which is a wax bean. I'm also doing a butternut squash variety, but I don't have a name for it yet. I do mostly natural growing. I only use chemical which are certified for organic use if I have to. Thanks for asking! James

Thanks for the reply, midwesterner. It really wasn’t slow at all.
I’m glad you explained gametophytic incompatible as cross-pollination resistant. I enjoy learning accurate terms, but it was nice to have an explanation right there in the text. Your projects sound very ambitious, and I wish you much success.
The only corn seeds I’ve heard of that resist cross pollination are Rebellion and Revolt, I believe, and I really don’t know much about them.
We have a subsection of the forum devoted to beans and legumes. I’m not a bean expert by any means, but there are some here who are. I’m sure we’d all be interested in hearing more about “Latta Lake” and “Golden Lake” if you’re able to share.
My goal with gardening is to help provide food for my family in a natural and healthful way. I’ve been blessed to be able to do it some years better than others. This has not been a good year for me garden-wise because of extreme heat and drought in Texas. It’s great that you have space enough to allow for canning and freezing your produce from your home garden. I hope I’ll be able to do more of that in future years.

Do you know which company offered those two corns? I'm trying to find more information about them.

I first heard about Rebellion as an offering of Sand Hill Preservation, but I think it’s not available this year. I did find this link openpollinated.com/product/rebellion-cycle-0-110-days-synthetic-op-untreated/From “Green Haven.” I know nothing about them, but they have a little paragraph at the bottom with more information. It says they were developed by Dr. Frank Kutka and The Seed We Need Project. It mentions Revolt as having the same gene. You’ll understand it more than I will.

It's simply wonderful to hear of home gardeners with breeding projects! With time, space and observation, there's no telling what a person can accomplish. Just need to encourage more people to try and educate them in the basics of plant breeding!
