rdback was kind enough to send me a whole bunch of things to grow this year. One of which is this cowpea. It’s called Calico Crowder. I wanted to see if it’s the same as or similar to Polecat. I’m running out of buckets around here. I put 2 of them in a flower pot, but the rest I had to put into the ground.

They are certainly healthy looking! This has been fun sprouting, cup planting and then setting out. I’m completely out of buckets and I still have cowpeas to plant!

It has always been my thinking that a man cannot have too many peas. This man (me) just wants some peas, regardless of the quantity. You may have to think about getting one of these automatic pea shellers. I have one of these, but have no peas...

woodeyeBack in the 70’s we had a pea sheller that ran off a hand mixer. You know that thing worked pretty well. My Aunt used to borrow it all the time. I hardly ever was allowed to use it because they always thought I’d get my fingers caught.

Yeah, well that would be possible I suppose. I'd hate to lose a finger to a pea sheller.
I bought that pea sheller back in 2014 because I had a huge pea patch, like 10 rows that were 80 feet long. Well you know what happened when the peas got loaded down and were within a couple of days of being ready to pick.
I'll let you guess what happened to the peas, but if you can't figure it out, highlight this area-------->>>>Deer <<<--------got 'em...

I'm only now getting some cowpeas in the ground. Had great plans for doing LOTS of them this year. For my birthday or Fathers' day my family got me this. Hopefully I'll get to use it this fall. The peas are coming up.
Your peas in the ground will probably do great!

LOL...My infinite wisdom (as well as Murphy's Law experiences) tells me to grow the peas first--THEN buy the pea sheller!

LOL...My infinite wisdom (as well as Murphy's Law experiences) tells me to grow the peas first--THEN buy the pea sheller! hahaha, well my wisdom is finite, so with that in mind, & being an optimist to a fault, I tried to think ahead & buy the pea sheller 9 years in advance of a bumper crop.
Which will be next year...
But then again, perhaps I'm not being an optimist to a fault. Maybe I'm just a faulty optimist...

@mecmax Now that is a fancy pea sheller!!
Years ago when the pea harvest came in, my one Old Uncle had one of my other Old Uncles over to help shell peas. The Old Uncles and my Aunts shelled peas like mad, drank lots and lots of wine and ate pounds of cheese. They divided up the peas into gallon ziplock bags and handed a couple to one of my other Old Uncles. Such a long boring story so far but no I am not done yet gosh.
Now shelling all those peas by hand was a lot of work and that was a pretty generous thing to do, to share with the lazy Uncle LOL. Well he started cooking those fresh peas. And like all the fresh peas before and after, they got a bit "foamy" as fresh picked peas cooking will do. The lazy Uncle horrified everyone by throwing all the peas away as they were spoiled because . . . they got foamy. That was one harvest shot and us kids were all smart enough to flee and play quietly for days on end after that. There was never another field planted with peas after that.

Ok, take a peek at these. The peas in the ground are so much nicer in color than the container pea. The container pea is so light in color. It must be missing something that the peas in the ground are getting. Calico Peas photo update August 17th

I’m going to guess that the roots are getting hotter in the pot. I remember reading somewhere when I was learning about all this crazy gardening in the heat in Texas that when plant roots get too warm it can kind of inhibit the uptake of nutrients or something like that. I was looking at your other bean threads, too, and noticed that the potted beans seem to be having more trouble. I know the ground is harder to work, but any chance you could do some emergency transplanting?
