Looks like some kind of botrytis. Bet they still make seed.

We’re making peas now. This is the final variety of pea left to save seeds on.

Thanks Teddy.
As you know, I was very excited to grow this particular pea. I do wish I could have found it in it’s original form without being crossed, but sometimes we have to take what we can get. I’m still excited to see the peas once they dry down. Is this pea the same as Calico? Gee, I just don’t know. I don’t believe it is, but the original polecat may have been. Being sure of something like that just isn’t my forte. I’m not even sure what direction to take from here, but I’ll probably save every pod of seed I can. I will watch each pod. I have two plants out of 4 making pods. So far, I’m seeing, the pods are going to be 5 to 6” in length and they are a slim type of pea similar in size and shape of Red Ripper. If anything changes, I’ll update this thread.

hmoosek, If I was to see the last photo you posted, and you asked me to guess the variety, I would have guessed Ozark Razorback. I always liked the way the Razorbacks had that streamlined, no nonsense pod. These appear to me to look exactly like the Razorbacks do in that respect, however I can't remember what color the flower is on Razorbacks. By my count, there are 13 peas per pod on these, but I'm sure you have already counted them and your count may differ...

Drum Roll Please!!!!!! The first Pod of polecat peas have dried. There were 12 peas in the pod woodeye , so you were very close! Let’s talk about this pea. Again, remember my seed source said they were crossed with an unknown type. My plants were late and finicky, but in the end they pulled through and are producing nice pods. Would I grow them again? I don’t want to say never, but here’s one reason why I wouldn’t. The peas themselves are so close visually to Calico, there really isn’t a need. Calico was earlier, vigorous, and overall a better looking plant. HOWEVER…There’s one caveat… These were grown in a container and the Calico was grown in the ground. I wouldn’t bring this up, but I have a calico in a container that’s growing at a slower rate than polecat and It still hasn’t dried a pod. So apparently neither of these peas like being in a container. I put 1 calico in a container just so I could watch how these two varieties grew side by side so to speak. Of course they were 30+ feet apart, but you get the meaning of what I was trying to see. I guess in all fairness, I should throw a handful in the ground next year for grins and giggles. I also need to put calico and polecat side by side and ask Wifypoo to see if she can see any differences.

First, the drum roll; next, the unveiling; finally, the hearty applause and cheering! Woo how! I’m so excited that you got some Polecat peas. I think your explanations about growing them in pots versus in the ground like Calico make a lot of sense. I can see how a variety can easily end up with a new name when it’s not a new variety just because someone doesn’t know what it is and needs to call it something. I do think it’s a good idea to let your wife compare the two peas and see if she notices differences that you didn’t see.
How many plants of Polecat ended up producing for you? How many pods are left to dry down?

@chrysantgemum I have 14 or so pods currently. I have 4 plants, but all the pods are on 2 plants.

I have no idea why my message went all the way to the right. I must have hit a button to do it, but can’t figure out how to undo it

Congratulations, hmoosek. Good going!
Maybe the excessive drum roll rattled your message all the way to the right on the post. I'm glad you posted again to tell something about the message going all the way to the right, because I hadn't seen it. I was only looking left.
Oh, you could use one of the many powers vested in you to delete your own message, then write a new one. Trouble is, it might go all the way to the bottom in the replacement message...
Yep, you gotta give it a chance in the ground next year. It would not be fair to the cowpea if you only evaluated it grown exclusively in a pot...

I guess my question is does it taste different. I know, we get involved n saving old varieties, but in the end they want to be eaten.

woodeye You’re on target! I had two pods today that had 13 each, plus 1 pod that had 14. So let’s see that takes the count up to 52 peas saved. Still lots of pods so we ain’t done yet. I’m removing them from vine once they get that soft leather feel in hopes the plant will make more. amyinowasso I didn’t test for taste as I’m trying to save every seed I can. I guess I’ll put that on my bucket list for next year. It would be nice to do a grow out of Ozark Razorback, Calico and Polecat. The polecat peas are really enjoying this cooler weather and ramping up as all my other peas are dying off.

Thanks for the update, HMooseK. I love knowing how many pea seeds you’re getting. I’m excited that they’re are more to come.
