Long story short, I got the wife’s blessing to get some quail. She is now gung ho after watching a bunch of tube videos. We dug out our 20 year old Hovabator incubator from the dark recesses of the shed and cleaned it up. The thermometer that came with it was toast. I guess 20 years of high and low temps in a shed, was too much to ask of it. I had a digital thermometer that I used to use while RVing and I stuck it in there. Plugged it in and let it run for a day and a half to see if it would maintain temp. After a little bit of adjustment to the wafer, it stayed at 99.5 for 24 hours plus. The egg turner also still works. I have located a lady that has a nice mix of quail colors and she gets 5 bucks a dozen. As soon as the get the brooder ready, it’s gonna be game on.

I have very little experience with them but understand they can be quite productive. Good luck! Keep us posted.

I plan to take you guys along on the hatch. We had to order a hydrometer/thermometer. We ordered a couple for good measure. You know the saying, 2 is 1 and 1 is none. They will probably take a couple weeks to arrive. At least that’s been my experience since the world went nutty.
The seller of the eggs has been real nice and helpful, giving me lots of guidance and advice. I’ve sourced feed from the local feed mill.
Mainly just trying to get all my ducks in a row, so I’ll be prepared to care for them right out the gate.

Mainly just trying to get all my ducks in a row, so I’ll be prepared to care for them right out the gate. I think maybe you should be getting all your quail chicks in a row instead. (Sorry, couldn’t help it.) I’m excited for you. So glad your wife got over the bathtub incident. I hope you’ll post lots of pictures. My nine year old (and I) would love it.

This made my day. At your original post, I was hoping you'd have time to share the journey. I cannot imagine how cute the tiny chicks would be.

This sounds like fun hmoosek ! I've often thought about raising Bobwhite Quail, simply to release them into the wild. They're beautiful birds and I love to hear their call in the quiet of early morning. Never did do it for a variety of reasons, but I still think about it lol.
Looking forward to your journey with the Coturnix.

I've about given up on ever raising any Bob White quail, at least in the near future, but I did recently teach my wife's little cockatiel to do a "Bob White" whistle. He's also working on the Andy Griffith theme song and "Jesus Loves Me" at the same time. He's a smart little bird, but he gets the two mixed up sometimes, which just makes him more fun to listen to.
