We have a thread about dogs, and a thread about goats, sheep, chickens, geese, rabbits, and honeybees, but no thread about pets in general; cats, goldfish, birds, monkeys, whatever ...
Speaking of monkeys, my wife has a little hand-raised cockatiel that was just hatched in mid-February of 2022. He's eleven weeks old. She named him, "Pretty Bird." I just call him, "Little Weasel."
I've been stuck inside the house for several days during this rainy weather, babysitting the bird. I'm usually way too busy in the garden, or out in the yard this time of year to have anything else going on, but for the past two weeks we've had a lot of rainy days to keep me cooped up inside.
During that time, this bird has become very attached to me, following me everywhere I go. He has just learned to fly and is getting pretty good at it, so no matter where I go, he's always right there, perching on my shoulder, perching on my head, using my eyeglasses for a ladder to climb my face, climbing up the back of my shirt, climbing into my shirt pockets, going up my shirt sleeve, going down my collar, making me crazy in general.
He likes chewing on things. He chewed my phone charger cord in half, he pretty much ate the point of attachment to my laptop charging cord. So, I've been trying to think of something to keep him occupied to keep him out of my hair (literally).
I hung an elastic hair band around his neck a few days ago, and that kept him occupied for several hours, until he chewed it in half and dropped it in the floor. So, I hung another one, and another one, around his neck until I eventually ran out of hairbands. Then, I braided clover stems into a necklace and hung that around his neck instead. He liked that better than the hairband, but it has been raining so hard lately that I've not been able to go outside to make another one.
So a few minutes ago, I made him a necklace out of a paper grocery bag handle. He has been so intrigued with it, that he fell off of the arm of a chair and didn't even flap his wings to try and break the fall. He just laid on his back, in the floor, with his feet over his head and wrestled with it until I picked him up and put him back on the chair. He's just like a baby monkey, getting into everything ... especially when he's sleepy. You can always tell when he needs a nap, by the way he acts so crazy like that.
Right now, he's fast asleep on the back of my hand while I'm typing this, or else I wouldn't be able to use the keyboard with my other hand for him using my fingers as a set of monkey bars.
