woodeye Nary a one. The blue greasy grit have a white film developing. I’m thinking compost hole. I’m getting ready to try some fresher seed. I’m afraid I’ve had some a tad too long without proper storage. I actually need to buy one of those small freezers just for my seed…So says the Queen of the household. Hahahaaaa Yes, her Majesty might bust you back to Private Moose if you don't heed her requests.
Probably the right move, just break out the fresh seeds, then it's full steam ahead!

I didn’t want this to end up a complete failure. Sometimes you can either punt or chunk it deep. Look at the germination rate for 2019 being 41%. I really want to be successful with this pea. This is the pea that was grown in the small town where I pumped gas as a youth. The fellow that grew this pea passed away in 1973. I have asked around, but no one I know remembers him or this pea, although I’m sure someone there does, I just haven’t asked the right individual yet. Town is small…Very small. Soooo. This time around the block I did a 45 minute soak in tap water and into a damp paper towel last night. Less than 24 hours we have a sprout.

In my search for the above pea, I found many black and white peas. When you think of polecat, black and white seems reasonable. I wouldn’t expect for a polecat pea to be maroon and white. zeedman sent this to me because I was sad about not being able to locate the above polecat pea. This one is called MN13. These seeds are from 2015 and I put them in a damp paper towel last night. SUCCESS!!!

I just added 3 varieties of beans to damp paper towels. They were nicked, but not soaked prior to placing them into the towels. Beans not too old as they are from 2018. Two of them came from Remy and the last came from a friend in Tennessee. Minnie Shatterly Cornfield bean Grey eyed greasy runner Hoteko macmex This should peek your curiosity as the top one has cornfield in the name. Sadly, I’ve no corn on which to grow them.

Good news is that cowpeas hold their viability a lot longer than do regular beans. I once had a jar of Georgia Long cowpea on the shelf, at room temperature for nearly 10 years and still had some germination. No way would that happen, here, with regular beans.
I will have to look. I believe I grew Polecat back in the mid 90s while living in Mexico.

rdbackI wanted you to see the polecat and calico side by side. As you can see, they are very similar. Maybe it’s me, but the pole cat’s appear to have a little more Cutshort appearance. Maybe not though as I see some of the calico’s have that as well. I have a few of your calico’s in paper towels to sprout. I will attempt to grow them so I can further compare.

I’ll tell y’all something else. Moose has to get to store to pick up some potting medium. All I have left around here is a half bag of sticks and twigs as I call it. It’s not worth a hoot for much. I didn’t notice when I bought it, but it clearly says not for container use. They ain’t lying either! Nothing that I’ve used it for has done worth a hoot!

So a few hours later, Moose has potting mix, has some more pea sprouts and has 8 sprouts potted up. Now we wait.
I have 4 Polecat cowpea and 4 MN13 cowpea sprouts potted up. Yea!
This should be a nice fall project. Sticking to my guns, I’ll be growing these in 5 gallon buckets. I’ll tell you what though, I bet next year I have some growbags.
Oh also, I have 3 more types of cowpeas soaking. Calico Crowder so I can compare with polecat. Piggott Family Cowpea MN 150

They do look similar HMK. A side-by-side is a good idea.
Ya know, I THINK I might have a few polecat beans around here somewhere. I got them in a swap several years ago. Never grew them out. I'll see if I can find them, or if I'm just confused and making it all up lol.
