macmex
This is from your #3 hybrid....I have forgotten the history of its origin. You sent me 3 slips of this. Potatoes are a nice size, but I only got one potato per hill--that may have been partially my fault because it was a new bed and I didn't dig it very well...also, I should have watered it better...

This is one hill of Red Wine Velvet (from the slips you sent)...all nice size and centrally located under the hill. That's all I dug this morning--have a lot more to go, including my hybrids grown from seed.

Way to go, june. Hoooraaayyy! They all look great, I hope to have pictures of Sweet Potatoes next year, I contacted macmex a couple of days ago about slips for next year. I'm on the list.
Good Job!

Looking good June! That might be what I currently call "Seedling #1." I haven't dug anything yet but last year that one gave me only a single large (really large) root. I'm hoping for more roots this year, but we'll see. I really need to move on harvest!

Those look really good, June.
I've noticed that the length of my vines in summer seems to determine what sort of harvest I'm going to get come Autumn. In years when I had vines 20' feet long, I had as much as 30 pounds of sweet potatoes under one vine. In years where the deer or the grasshoppers really mowed my vines, I'd be lucky to get two or three potatoes that were barely big enough to call potatoes. I suspect this year will be one of those years. The grasshoppers and the deer kept my vines pruned back to about a foot long all Summer.

I dug a few more sweet potatoes this morning. These are more of my "original" Okinawan/Hawaiian. Long story, but these are the ones that you can only buy in Asian or specialty stores. Commercial growers don't grow them on the mainland and everything shipped in from Hawaii has to be irradiated, so they only last for about 3 weeks...and they're expensive--the last I bought (last year) were $3.59 lb...don't know if you can even buy them now and at what cost. Shipped in potatoes will not sprout due to irradiation. I found some live slips in California last year...they grew great, but did not produce a single potato (or if they did, the gophers got them before I did.) I overwintered some of the greens and planted early (probably early May).
Its a real 'Easter egg hunt" to find these--they are evasive-- This is one hill--spreading out about 3' in all directions--but I am happy to see they will produce something at least. (and they really do taste good!)

Looks great, june. Another fine job. Do the purple Sweet Potatoes like that taste anything like an orange Sweet Potato do? I've never partaken of a purple Sweet Potato...

@ Woodeye
They all have a different taste...and Asian sweet potatoes are different from American sweet potatoes....and nothing like traditional 'Thanksgiving' sweet potatoes. This photo is from last winter--I haven't cooked any sweet potatoes recently. When I do cook sweet potatoes, I cook a sample of at least 3 or 4 different kinds--then have a mixed plate with samples to enjoy the different tastes. My favorites are the white ones...and the purple..also the orange----heck, I like them ALL!
Next time that I see you, I have a sweet potato sampler box that has your name on it! No drooling allowed! These won't be cured for at least another month...

june, That's all good info, Thank You...
I've never tried white Sweet Potatoes either, I know I'll like all of them. Oh yes, you will see me again, guaranteed. Probably just have to wear a bib, not sure drooling can be stopped when there are plates of nice sweet potatoes like that on the table. Those are pretty as can be...

We dug a good many of our Okinawa sweet potatoes today. Indeed, this one tends to spread its roots far out from the plant. The first couple of plants we dug didn't have any roots closer than 2' from the slip we had planted. Some roots were 3' out. Next we dug two other varieties and then back to another group of Okinawa. Interestingly, the second group of Okinawa not only produced much more root per plant but also, the roots were bunched under the plants (or tended to be). Here's a photo of a "bunch" or Okinawa sweets.
For me, the jury is still out on this one. We adore the flavor and texture but it isn't very productive compared to other varieties,
Still, we'll sure enjoy these!

That is one good-looking clump of roots, macmex. june, I went back a page and was reading about your harvests. I admire your keeping your Okinawa vines alive all winter. Your potatoes look great. I’m like woodeye. I’ve had a couple varieties of orange or yellow orange potato, but I’ve never had a white or purple one (except for in that Ube flavoring when our neighbors took our family out for ice cream this spring.). They look really pretty in the pictures.

George,
I was hoping that would be you when I saw there was a new post on the sweet potato forum. I'm glad to hear you got to do some digging. I'll bet that's pretty tough going with the ground as dry as a powder keg lately.

june, I cleaned the screen on my laptop this morning for the sole purpose of admiring these beautiful sweet potatoes some more. However, now I can see that you spelled my name wrong on the gift tag. Not a problem though, that happens to me a lot, and I am not offended easily...
