Most of my pods froze and dried up to nothing. I managed to get 5 small beans from the frozen pods. It was a better pea year than bean for me.

Do you have any other seed from what you planted?

No George, that was the last of my original seed. I had 4 or 5 good looking pods, I just ran out of time. I got sick and they froze on me. I’m going to study on it over the Winter, the pots help me, but I’m not sure they help the plants. They do so much better in ground.

Facebook threw me an ad for Bounty Hunter seeds this morning. Google had been bringing up this company in searches I made for seeds I wanted. I went there today, and lo and behold, Wood's Mountain Crazy Bean. Except, they list it as early and stringless. What do you think? www.bountyhunterseeds.com/product/woods-mountain-crazy-bean/

Well, they got the history right (really good write up) and the pictures are accurate. I suspect they just slipped up when they called them stringless. I'd bet it's the real deal.

I ordered some. I needed a couple of things to justify the shipping for the tomato I wanted. (they had Baker Family heirloom, too.)

Wow! I should take some time and investigate who is running this seed company. Maybe I know them.

Speaking of beans, my son and I saw a lone grasshopper this morning while raking leaves away from the workshop to do some welding. I lost every last bean that I planted in 2022 to the second grasshopper plague in a decade. A guy has to wonder sometimes how a thing like that is even possible after the 0° freeze we had over Christmas Break. Hopefully, 2023 will be a better year for gardening. It almost has to be.

His name is Shaun Brodmerkel. This seems familiar to me and may come from the Heirloom Tomatoes Anonymous Facebook group, and now I look at it he is actually on my friends list. I remember I silenced him because I couldn't figure out who he was. I had to go to Facebook to find his location Sarver, PA. There was a company called Mariseeds that used to offer Blame Horton's seeds and Dean Slater, which this guy also offers. Mariseeds Facebook page does nothing but spam now, so I think she is out of business. Maybe he got seeds from Sand Hill.

Heavyhitter, you should look into the grasshopper bait now, many places didn't have it last year.

The bottom left-hand grouping in this photo are seeds I started last Thursday (four days ago) from my saved Woods Mountain Crazy Beans. I don’t normally transplant beans, but I decided to give it a try this year as I was wanting to do some indoor starts of cucumbers, zucchini, and pumpkin, but not very many, and that gave me lots of extra room in my tray. Maybe getting a head start this year will help me get some beans to set before the heat comes on later in the spring. I hadn’t really been totally sure of the maturity of the beans when I harvested them, but I’m pleased to see that the seed I planted is having good germination. I’m excited to see what I can do with a spring crop of these this year.

My Woods Mountain Crazy Beans are growing like crazy! They’ve been inside for the past couple of days because of the weather. Unfortunately the LED grow light that I bought last summer stopped working the other day. In good news, it’s still under warranty, so I’m supposed to be getting a replacement. In bad news, my plants don’t get enough light inside, so they may be getting leggier than I’d like. Nevertheless, they’re still looking good. The tray has been rotated since I last posted a picture. Now the WMCB are in the top right-hand corner.

Wow. I’ve been bad about updating this thread. I transplanted those seedlings out on 3/22 according to my garden journal. Apparently I hadn’t hardened them off as well as I’d thought, but we also had some really intense sunshine and heat soon after I transplanted them. A number suffered from some crispy leaves because of that, but most survived and are doing fine. I do plant a few seeds where I had space, and those seedlings started coming up in early April. My transplanted beans have started to flower nicely. I saw the first open bloom on Monday, I believe. I took a photo of one of the plants tonight.

I had my camera in the garden the other day and got a shot of the bed where I have WMCB planted in front of tomatoes [Porter and Porter’s Pride]. I’m getting excited because they’re putting on some beans now.
