This is the text I sent to the Tahlequah Daily Press today. It probably won't be in the paper any earlier than the 8th.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s the first half of January. Have you thought about starting tomato seeds yet? It’s great to dream about the coming growing season but really, it’s way too early to start tomatoes or peppers. However this is a great time to get seed for the coming season. In fact, in light of the uneven delivery times we’ve seen over the last year or so, I’d highly recommend that gardeners get moving on this as soon as possible. The best time to start tomatoes from seed is 6-8 weeks before the average last frost date, which, for Tahlequah would be between February 18 and March 4. So the fact is, it is really time to order seeds if you’re going to get them through a seed catalog.
One can get okay tomato seeds from off the racks in box stores but the truth is that there are probably a thousand times better selection for those selecting from seed catalogs. Cherokee Country has a unique climate which makes the selection of variety an important issue. Variety can make the difference between getting little or no crop and harvesting harvesting a bumper crop. Variety can make the difference between harvesting an “okay tomato,” and harvesting a tomato which makes one smile after every bite!
Green Country Seed Savers is a group which makes a point of finding and propagating garden varieties which excel in our special conditions, and we have members with diverse tastes, so we can help you find the best fit for your garden and culinary preferences. It’s even possible that one of us might have seed to share. Consider yourself invited. Come on out! We’re meeting January 9 at 2:00 pm at Liberty Grace Chapel (7584 Hwy 82A, Tahlequah OK 74464), three miles North of Moodys Store. Our meetings are very informal, with swapping of information, seeds and stories.. We start at 2:00 pm and folk come and go as they please. We rarely go on til 4 pm. Questions? Call George McLaughlin at 918-457-8284
If you can’t make that meeting consider dropping in on us at our online forum. There’s a wealth of information there as well as a lot of good gardening camaraderie. This is available any day of the week.
Hope to see you soon!
“Heidi is a medium size plum shaped tomato which hales from Cameroon, Africa. It’s great for eating fresh or cooking, produces all season and … laughs at our heat. Seed can be found at Victory Seeds, Sandhill Preservation Center and sometimes through Green Country Seed Savers members.
