I just saw what looks like it might be a good idea for storing potatoes underground, by burying an old, dead, chest freezer. However, old chest freezers are not known for their rust proof exteriors. So, a person would probably need to paint the steel sides with tar or something first. Plus, you'd have to build a weatherproof lip from angle iron and some old innertube material or strips of wood, because where I live, rain would run right through the crack between the flat lid and the cest cavity below. Believe me, the magnetic seal doesn't stop blowing rainwater from entering. I've learned that the hard way in years past.
The PVC vents shown in the photo might be a problen in our wet climate too, because of rain blowing in, but out west, it might work just fine as is. With a little modification, this ought to work as a root cellar. They make chinaman caps for PVC pipes. Of course, where I live, it might just become a place for snakes, scorpions, and spiders, to keep cool in summer? Maybe, if it were only half-buried, that wouldn't be a problem?
I've just inherited a big old, dead, 27 cubic foot chest freezer, coutesey of the compressor giving up the ghost last week. If I can't think of a use for it, I'll have to pay to haul it off. Maybe, I'll cut a hole in the end of it, frame it in with a little sheet metal roof, fir the sides with pallet wood and make a nice, insulated doghouse out of it?
The wheels in my head are turning, just no traction yet ... I think someone may have sneaked a concrete block under my brain's axle.
