We ate all we could, gave a lot to family. We were also able to freeze 12 gallon bags for future use. They need space. I gave each plant a square foot. These are cold tolerant down to 12 degrees. Heat tolerant up till the end of May when we started noticing them getting buggy. my notes say we planted April 2 and we pulled them up May 27. I just came back to this thread because I remembered that I had received a free pack of Komatsuna the last time I ordered from Baker Creek. The planting dates and heat tolerance information were just what I needed. I just lost my young kale plants this week when I was unable to water the garden for a time, and I think I’m going to try some Komatsuna in part of that space. (It’s a small space, but I love greens, and even just a couple of harvests will make it worth it.) Thanks for posting such good information on this thread. It really was a help to me to find it again.

Glad I could help. We really like our greens. Both types were cold hardy and lasted a good while before getting buggy. They will give you more than your money’s worth. The Semposai is my favorite, because it’s more cabbage like, but Both are real good with a bowl of beans and cornbread.

I’m glad to hear from you, HmooseK, especially after the rough weather that hit parts of our state last night. We got 1/4 inch of gentle rain, for which we were grateful. We’re more at risk for wildfires than for tornados, but I hear that any number may have hit east and north of here.

It was a rough across our state. My Brother said he took a picture of a funnel cloud across the field from us, but it didn’t drop all way to the ground. Most of the storms went North & South of us. At one point we had a warning, but it fizzled out before it got to us. We had so many storms they were stealing energy away from each other. We got a lot of rain and a bit of hail, but fortunately we rode it out safe and sound. It sure turned cool though. The last couple days the wind is howling and it’s downright chilly. I’m having to stand with my backside up against the heater. Where is summer?

We had a fire in the woodstove the past couple of days. It still felt chilly this morning, but temperatures are supposed to get back to the eighties, so we decided to let the house stay cool.
A funnel cloud across the field sounds too close for comfort. I’m glad you’re safe.
Are you getting your garden going?

It was 28 degrees here this morning. We had a heavy frost, but it warmed ut to 57 by noon. I've gotten a lot of yard work done today, cleaning up odds and ends that will get in the way of mowing later in the year. We usually have to mow by April 1st because the Spring grasses are so heavy by then, they'll start to choke out the mower. This year has been so weird that we don't have anything green out there yet.

Here’s a picture of some Komatsuna I planted out a little over a week ago. I don’t know if this is flea beetle damage or something else. I haven’t seen anything one the plants. I’ve already lost one seedling of Komatsuna and one of Lacinato Kale in the same bed. It could have been cutworm damage. I’m really not sure, but I do know that I am not doing well with my greens this year. The Komatsuna seedlings looked great when I put them out, but I think they’re moving backwards not forwards this season. I’m hopeful that the plants will have a growth spurt soon and overcame whatever is eating them, but who knows. The good news is that we have had a couple of nice harvests of lettuce from plants I transplanted a while back, and I have some germination in a salad row I sowed fairly recently. Most of the rest of the garden is looking pretty good, and I’m glad for that.

We’ve had high winds daily for the past couple of weeks. It’s turning out to be a bad start ... I just dunno

@bon
Oh man, this year has been brutal as far as wind goes. Yesterday we were right out in the bad weather. We stayed just ahead and to the east of three bad storms. One was a twister and the other two had shown rotation on the radar. We got caught out in the stuff, but managed to stay just a few minutes ahead of them. We did get caught in some heavy rain and cross winds about 7 or 8 miles from home.

Thanks for checking in here, HmooseK. I was thinking of you today as I was listening to some coverage about the tornado that hit Salado. I’m glad to know you’re okay.
We had hot dry air blow in today. I think the thermometer said it hit 95 with 10 percent humidity. If we don’t get rain soon, my rain tanks will be empty. At least I’ll have some water that I can collect from the air conditioning units, but that’s not nearly enough for my whole garden.

We got 1/4 inch of rain two nights ago. Yay!
I have two Komatsuna seedlings and two Dinosaur Kale seedlings that haven’t given up the ghost yet, but they’re not thriving. I have checked for insects before and not found anything, but I guess it’s been a while since I did, because when I looked today the undersides of the leaves were just covered with aphids. I have ladybugs in the garden, and I like to let them control the aphids, but this infestation was so bad on my struggling plants that I pulled out the little spray bottle and sprayed them off with a neem solution. There weren’t any ladybugs visible in that bed, and I figure they’re isn’t nearly so much greenery there as there is in the other beds, so they’re not wanting to move into the open out of their shelter. I’ll have to keep a closer eye on them..
