So, this is the fat red okra I mentioned recently. I had assumed that it would be almost identical to Hill Country Red, but if memory serves, it has a slightly different shape and the red is more dominant on this strain. Plan to use it for pickling.

That's a beautiful shade. It's neat to watch you grow and potentially develop!

That is beautiful, Hedgeapple. I really love the colors on a red okra. It does remind me of Hill Country Red. I wonder if I have any photos for comparison. (I take lots and lots of garden photos so that I can share my garden with my mother by email. Because I take so many, though, I also end up deleting them, so it’s possible that I don’t have any.)

While the rest of my okra is trying to give up the ghost in Northern VA, Old Red Blush is still popping off flowers.

Beautiful! Why is the other okra trying to give up the ghost up there? I would think it would be good through September, but I haven’t been tracking the weather closely. I think maybe you started yours a good bit earlier than I did mine, and you were even hotter for much of the summer, I believe. I feel like my okra has just really been coming into its own over the past couple of weeks.

I feel like my okra has just really been coming into its own over the past couple of weeks. My garden took a dreadful beating from hail about a month ago, followed by multiple clusters of relatively cool heavy rain days, so while it has recovered somewhat, it hasn't had the weather or remaining foliage needed to power back to 100%.

Makes complete sense.
My mother lives in the central part of the state, and she’s been having drought. Even with the tropical storm moving through, she got only just over 1 inch of rain. She has a number of rain barrels, and I think before the recent rain, she had emptied them all to keep her okra and shell beans going. She’s been even hotter than we have been for most of the summer. It sounds like you haven’t been having that same experience farther north and east.

Soaking up the sun. It doesn't matter how many times I see them, they always make me smile.
