Last week I picked some cowpeas just a bit too early, so this week I made sure to get only the dry pods off the vines. I shelled out a little bowlful yesterday. These are the two beds where we chopped and dropped some cowpeas and the sunn hemp but left some of the cowpeas to climb up the trellises. These are photos after I picked the dry pods. I’m enjoying seeing what these are doing.

The weather has been severe this year, and here in Virginia is no exception. The excessive heat and humidity has caused a lot of flower drop, but the Whippoorwill is starting to power through it and set pods.

rdbackHave you ever tried White Whippoorwill peas? I saw them on a seed site, but haven’t grown them. I’m curious about them though.

Any varieties that excel this season ought to be added to a special list of seeds to keep for hard times. This has been one of the toughest gardening years in recent memory.

Yes, that’s where I saw them. Plus, the other 42 varieties I was looking at. Haha!

If I’m successful saving seeds, you’re welcome to anything you like. Some of the others I have plenty of seed now, there just a tad older , but as you saw, germination rate wasn’t bad at all.

Thanks, moose. I appreciate it. I hope to be able to return the favor here, once I get my super-max-high-security-deer-proof-compound® up and running next year.
I'm glad you saw that I was just jokin' with you in my post...

I'm glad you saw that I was just jokin' with you in my post... Oh yes, I’m a big ol’ cut up. You see that with how spike and I Tease one another. I try to add a little humor wherever I go. I have an ol’ sawbones I go to and he’s real straight laced, buttoned up, never crack a smile kind of fellow, but every now and then, you can tell he wants to laugh at something I’ve said. So far, he’s kept it together, but I bet after I was gone he had a good laugh.
