I have grown both Ginger and turmeric. Turmeric has prettier leaves. I even got a variety that had variegated leaves. I make a tea we use for colds and flu from Ginger, turmeric, lemon juice and honey. So when the leaves die back in fall I use the food processor to shred both ginger and turmeric and freeze it in ice cube trays. I save a few eyes and replant them. I agree, while they don't mind heat, they do better in semi shade and would probably appreciate some humidity.

I’ve never tried turmeric so far, but I’d like to some time.
I meant to move my ginger a little closer to our house this week since we were expecting some cold (but not freezing) nights for a couple of days. I didn’t manage, but thankfully it didn’t seem to phased. Once temperatures look to be regularly in the forties, I’ll have to decide whether to give it a space inside or in the garage.
@rdback, did you get a chance to bring your ginger in before your freezing weather hit?

Sure did. It's in the "overwinter area" in the basement.

My husband helped me move our ginger in tonight ahead of the cold front that’s supposed to blow in tomorrow midday. I also brought in a jade plant and desert rose, though they’ll probably be moved to the garage. The ginger will probably stay in the school/art/craft/garden room all winter as it did fine there last year.

Chrysanthemum, thanks for reminding me that this thread was here! I would have posted about my ginger, here, if I had remembered!

I'm sure we're going to grow ginger every year now that we've succeeded with a decent crop!

I’m just thrilled that you had such a good harvest from it, macmex . I’ve never pulled all ours, of course, but four pounds is a lot of ginger. How will you store it?

This weekend my husband and I were doing some rearranging around our house, and we were moving our planter of ginger on a hand truck. It had a sudden spill, and so I got to see that I have a LOT of ginger root growing in there. There weren’t too many shoots but a lot of healthy looking roots. I scooped up the spilled stuff, and we moved all the ginger to the center of our pumpkin bed to see how it does there. We’re expecting rain forest type rain this weekend, so maybe that will encourage it to grow [if it doesn’t all drown].

The ginger that my husband and I moved to our pumpkin bed is doing well. It’s starting to put up some new growth. The pumpkins, of course, have taken over the center of the bed where the ginger was planted, but I know that ginger actually doesn’t like too much sun, though it loves heat, so we’re just letting the leaves provide shade. To take the picture of the shoots, I had to move the leaves aside. The second photo shows what the area really looks like.

What a great idea! Sure hope it works! This could be a major break through for folk wanting to grow ginger in our climate.

The only problem with this spot is that it will still be subject to winter freezes, and the ginger won’t survive those even this far south. For the past two winters I’ve kept the planter inside, and the past two winters here have been uncharacteristically harsh. I will be interested to see how it fares this summer, though, in that spot. It’s not that hard to start new shoots in the spring.

I guess I never updated this thread after we moved from Texas to Virginia. I left the ginger behind in the pumpkin bed there this summer. Shortly after we moved here my daughter wanted to cook an Indian Butter Chicken recipe, and we bought some ginger root at the grocery store for that. We used what we needed and stored the rest on the counter where it started to sprout. Once a plant shows an inclination to grow, I just can’t help myself. I have to give it a chance. I ended up putting sprouts in the corners of the planter where I have my eggplant. They’ve done well there, and I have numerous fronds. There is some browning on the leaves, and I don’t know if that is just from the time of year or from too much sun and light since I have a south-facing window and a grow light for the eggplant. Recently when I was watering some of the potting soil got washed off the roots. I’ve since covered them back up with a mulch of hair clippings from my son’s recent hair cut, but I snapped a photo before I buried them again. I thought it was neat to see the old root with the beige-colored skin and the baby roots with their creamy flesh and pink accents. I hope it can show up in the close-up.
