Here's my planting of Alabama Blackeyed Butterbean at 32 days from seed. They're about 4 feet up their poles. Indeed, they start out trying to spread on the top of the soil, but once they get hold of the poles they climb pretty well. Those are Cherokee Striped Cornhill in the background.

46 days from seed. This bean is beginning to reveal it's vigor. The weeds, too, are revealing their vigor here. I keep hacking and weeding. Still, this is my three sisters' garden and one of the things I love about it is that it does so well in spite of some neglect.

I continue to be impressed with this bean as it develops in our hot Oklahoma summer. August 14 I found flowers on the vines. They may have been there earlier, but that's when I first spotted them.
That same day, as I stepped through the weeds, inspecting the garden, my ankle got snagged by a branch of this bean which was running along the ground, without support. I noted that this branch even had flowers on it. I suspect Alabama Blackeyed Butterbean would do very well as a cornfield bean, in a three sisters arrangement.
Here's picture of the tripod on August 28. The plants are really growing fast now! There are pretty large pods on the plants too.
If I can figure a way to cook these so that anyone else in the family likes them, I'll find a way to grow this one more frequently. My other limas are more heat sensitive than this one.

Well, I'm a little disappointed. I cut my Alabama Blackeyed Butterbeans down last night. There was not a single bean of usable size on the plant. There are lots of pods which appear to be full size but the beans inside never filled out. I suspect it's simply our infamous Oklahoma heat that caused the issue. Last year my Calico WIllow Leaf Pole Limas did the same thing.
Here's a photo of my Alabama Blackeyed Butterbeans. They got hit by a light frost, Friday night and survived, but it was clear they weren't going to finish maturing anything.

It was a challenging year. I sure hope next year is better! I’ve already started digging through my seeds. I’m so ready! C’mon winter, get here and get gone.

Well, that sure is a shame George. I was hopeful ABB would produce for you, since we had such a hot July and they continued right along.
Hopefully the goats enjoyed them lol.

I used the vines to feed goats and rabbits last night. This morning, as I did chores before dawn, I made a mental note to record something. Rabbits DON'T LIKE Lima bean foliage and pods, but goats do. The rabbits didn't touch their greens last night but the goats were begging for more
