I had my camera out back today and took a picture of one of my Las Tablas Dwarf Ajicito peppers. What’s interesting is that the two plants that are flourishing more than any others are planted into the holes of a cinderblock bed that we constructed this spring. The whole bed was experimental as it’s a southwest exposure, and it gets reflected heat from the house. I put Roselle in the middle and some herbs in the holes. Overall, the bed is doing well. Because I had space, I put a couple of peppers in the front of the bed in the middle of May, and they are loving it. They’re bigger than my garden plants by far (the garden ones might get too much shade). These two are starting to produce a number of buds. We’ve had heat this summer, but it has been cooler than normal in May and June, and the first week of July has been very cool and rainy compared to what’s normal. I’m really impressed by this pepper in its less than ideal home, though, so I’m interested to see how it does when summer’s heat really shows up.

Those Ajicitos are incredible plants. They bore so heavily here that we couldn't keep up with them, even with deer munching on them nightly. They definitely qualify as 'feel good' plants.

Mine were all failures for one reason or another, mostly too much rain. Tried twice. I have a few seeds left. Not going to bother until mid winter.

I think I need a few more “feel good” plants in my garden. I hope Ajicito will prove to be one for me.
Bon, when I first read your comment, my mind lurched a bit on the words “mid winter.” When I engaged my brain, though, it seemed quite obvious that yes, I do start my pepper seeds inside in mid winter. I guess I just never phrased it to myself that way. I remember the first time I started peppers in January down here in Texas, I could hardly believe it myself, but it is a good time. This year I found myself inside my house potting up tomatoes while we had snow and sub-freezing temperatures in February.

I actually fumbled with spring before I realized it. Seems odd, but that's exactly what happens.

My peppers in the holes of cinderblocks continue to do well. They’re are several small fruits (and a grasshopper nymph?).

The Ajicitos in the holes of the cinderblock beds continue to do well. They survived quite a heavy rainstorm a couple of weeks ago (2 inches in one hour on Sunday night, then another 2 inches the next morning, and added to all that was the fact that they get runoff from the roof). It’s been dry since then, and sometimes in the afternoon I run out and give them water to get them through the heat, but they keep on plugging. The first one is starting to color up. I figure they’re smaller than normal because of their confined growing situation, but they really are lovely plants. I’m really excited to be trying them this year. Thanks to this forum for introducing me to them and to macmex for sending me seeds.

Those Ajicito peppers are amazingly productive little plants, and so mild that children can enjoy them right off the plant. They are definitely on my 'feel good' plant list. Those and Roselle are two of my favorites.

So far I haven't met anyone who doesn't like this pepper!

My wife's pet deer loves ajicitos so much that it's worth growing them just for her to snack on.

Wow, Hank! Those are beautiful plants! What a nice garden spot you have there. I blew that photo up just to enjoy the foliage on that one. My peppers never look that healthy here. Probably too much acid in my soil.

I’ve planted a couple of these Las Tablas Dwarf Ajicito peppers in my garden this year. I notice them every time I’m in the pepper row because they’re such beautiful plants. My other pepper varieties (sweet banana, shishito, purple jalapeño) are taller and flowered earlier, but the shape and foliage on the Ajicitos win the beauty contest award. I think I have my first tiny fruits on one, and when those start maturing, I think it will just add to the beauty. This picture doesn’t really do the plant justice as I took it in that late afternoon today while the sun was still on it, but it shows what a bushy, full plant it is. My other peppers are taller and more scraggly. I know they’ll fill out more later, but I just so admire the form of these.

I finally got some into the ground here. But they do grow quickly. I'm sure I'll get peppers.
Yes, this pepper "out ornamentals" the ornamentals!
