No. I didn't plant Spangler this year. In some ways I wish I had. As I re-read this thread it struck me just what a fine bean this is. Instead, I planted Cherokee Striped Cornhill in that garden. I did two plantings (April 30 & July 22-24). I have so many native pollinators on my place that I've had to cut down on how many varieties I plant in a given year. Maybe in 2022 I'll get back to Spangler. My impression of this bean is that it's a really good, solid producer, but needs some cool nights to really do well.

The moles or voles tunneled under them and killed most of them.

I’m sorry to hear that, Hank. I know what losing a crop is like.

Hi my name is Ron. I am new to this post but not new to gardening in general and more specifically growing beans. Macmex I must say I really liked reading your input on the Spangler Cornfield bean. I could really relate to your obvious love of growing and seeing the resulting attributes of different varieties of beans. I too thought that this bean was very similar to Turkey craw. I couldn't see anywhere in the post what state and zone you live in? By your results I don't think I would be able to plant this variety of bean in my zone 5b Maine garden for dry beans?? Approx. how many days to dry seed did it take for you? Enough questions for now. Looking forward to your feedback, Ron

Ron, I live and garden in NE Oklahoma, in the Ozarks. I think our zone is 7a, but I don't know how helpful that information really is. We get blazing hot summers such as a Maine resident would probably find unimaginable. Yet we also made it down to -20 F for a few nights, last February. It warms up fairly early here, but then we can get frost as late as the end of May. Oklahoma weather is "bipolar."
I agree that Spangler is probably the same or very close to at least one of the Turkey Craw beans and I also suspect that every Turkey Craw variety would be a bean I would love.
What I don't know, at this point, is how temperature dependent Spangler is for 1) flowering and 2) pod set. I noticed in my 2020 posts that I had a plant at 55 days which was going to make seed. I'm pretty positive that it did. That plant was planted July 13 and was in full flower at 55 days. Theoretically I should have had viable seed, easily at 85 days, but that plant would have been growing at breakneck speed during our July heat, which you don't have in your location.
You could try it. I'd love it if you did and then posted your findings!

Looking over my notes and dates on photos I realize I neglected to write down days to mature seed for this bean in 2020. I know from what I did record that I had seed by 107 days but I don't know if I had some earlier. I suspect the later planting produced seed in fewer days.
