I thought I'd add a picture of heavy hitter okra.

Lots of blooms! Looks really good, Hank!
You'll have lots of friends if you have lots of okra! I had a crew of helpers out here just yesterday, picking okra in exchange for all the weeds we pulled earlier in the year. I enjoy doing things like that more than I enjoy selling stuff. It's a way better feeling inside.

I didn't get enough Okra last year. It was a short summer, yeah?

Way too short! It was nearly June before the weather warmed up enough to plant okra here last year.

It's funny, because our short, cooler summer, last year was hotter than some of the hottest in the upper Midwest or Northern East Coast. This difference probably accounts for mediocre reviews of some varieties, which are meant for hot weather, yet are planted in those areas (forget about the Pacific Northwest!). Though the gardeners are thinking it's hot, the plants are still waiting for HEAT. I know that Old Timey Cornfield Pumpkin produces much smaller squash in northern Iowa than here, half the size. Last summer was one of the leanest years we've had for pumpkins and okra. Our Old Timey Cornfield Pumpkins were half the size of normal. Stewarts Zeebest Okra simply died. AfricanX okra didn't reach its usual size, but at least it did produce.

That makes me feel better. Didn't get much pumpkin or winter squash. Plenty for seed, tho.

I only had one Old-Timey Cornfield Pumpkin that made it to normal size. 2020 was a disappointing year for a lot of things in the garden.

I finally finished pulling up all of my dead okra stalks today.
I didn't set out to actually finish that project today, I was just going to get started on it, but after each row, I'd say to myself, "I'm gonna pull just one plant on the next row, so it will at least be started."
Every time I pulled just one plant on the next row, I'd say, "Just one more row, before I go home."
By and by, I had finished several rows. By dusk, I had finished the entire garden ... Man, am I tired now! The tips of my fingers are so raw from pulling okra stalks that it's painful to be typing right now, but it's finally all done!
For reference, this row is 24" inches wide, by 180' feet long. This is what one row looks like, knocked down and ready to be pulled. This is the finished product. My cover crop of Red Clover and Hairy Vetch looks awesome right now!Even with all the deer predation, the cover crop is still this lush. It has really flushed out since the cold weather finally went away.

My wife got me a Galaxy phone for Father's Day. I just now figured out how to download the photos I took with it that day. Today is July 14th, but I don't have any more recent photos, so here is where my okra was back on June 20th.

More recent photos.
I think I took these about two weeks ago. It has been so muddy out there that I seldom touch a camera after pulling weeds with my muddy hands. I need to start a practice of taking photos before I go to work and get so dirty.
Heavy Hitter Okra, planted April 29th , 2021.One of the tough pods I overlooked. It was a little over 9" inches at the shoulder. This is a 16.9 ounce Atwoods water bottle that it is leaning on for a size reference. I've been trying to keep these from going mature before my plants finish branching out. Mature pods send a hormone signal to the plant, that it has accomplished its task. If even one pod gets to this stage the plant will begin shutting down to nurture seed development. If you keep the plant picked clean, it will produce more branches in an attempt to put on new blossoms. Once all the branches are developed, you can just let it go, but you have to coax the plants into production by keeping them picked clean at all times before that point. Full, terminal branching normally happens some time around mid-August.

I keep checking regularly to see when you have the seeds available. I can't wait to try this variety.

I usually start selling seed some time around Thanksgiving. It takes me that long to get caught up on harvesting and to get things sorted out. Hand cracking all the okra pods and sorting out the culls takes a lot of time.
